It needs a coder anyway - not like anyone with any smarts (which is probably most coders) are going to join a project that in likelihood will get shut down. btw - isn't it Gearbox that made OF - or are they a subsect of Valve? or did Valve buy them? |

id software foxed Generations for Q2. They threatened to fox a Q3 style mod for HL2 unless it had some content changed (but i belive they told HOW it would be legal). I'd but their name on this list. -- Go play some Quake 2: q2server.fuzzylogicinc.com |

isn't id helping out the open source community? so why would they fox crap liek that? that would be pretty hypocritical |

Not really. Open-Source and copyright are two totally different things. Its one thing to open-source an engine, but I've never seen a company open-source any assets |

Mods get foxed all the time when they develop using IP they don't own, this is just the way it goes. Heck the term foxing comes from the Alien Doom 1 mod back in the day! People are always well aware of the risks involved when they do this kind of project. -- My Blog |

That's just it, they're not aware. They have the ignorant belief that so long as they're not selling anything, they're untouchable, or that the owner of the property in question won't care. |

because they don't make the content opensource, just the engine's. I'd say they are the nicest company to be foxed by because they will help you out instead of throw you in prison first. BlueWolf72 wrote: Heck the term foxing comes from the Alien Doom 1 mod back in the day!
Q1 actually. I remember the announcement. Once I read that I went directly to cd-rom.com & got it. satos wrote:So our Transformers project can be foxed? Hmm... i dont think that Hasbro try to close us in Russia.
BTW, we dont have such laws. :-p You should realy keep up on current news. Russia is interested in expanding trade with the US & the US said Russia most start following US copyright law's to protect US companies. Edited by: TheHappyFriar -- Go play some Quake 2: q2server.fuzzylogicinc.com |

Yes, but we still dont want to accept WTO, because of some issues... And as i said - there is no such laws in Russia. Project must be prohibited in US, but only if it will be distributed by 3rd person in US (or if i'll publish it directly). But still... about 70% of characters will be ours, not Hasbro or Takara. That's why transformer Magnus will transform in KAMAZ, not in original hardtruck. Our mod are based on alternative story and universe. Trust me, you will never see an Optimus Prime, but Ginrai and other Japan and Russian characters - yesss... |

Actually, the Doom Aliens mod wasn't CnD'd to my knowledge, because of game laws being a bit of a grey area when it arrived. 3rd party content like that wasn't really expected and there wasn't much of a mod community like there is today. As for the legal situation in Russia, I'd be careful, it doesn't just come down to "In Russian we don't have these laws", because you're messing with an internationally distributable content set, and thus it's not just governed by your laws. If you do nothing to prevent users in some countries downloading your content (which in many cases, all that is required is a warning screen telling the user that what they may be downloading may be illegal where they are), then you can still be liable. I've seen a US mod team shut down by a Danish legal firm before, in some rather odd circumstances, so it can happen. |

I think a huge indicator of LucasArts/Sony's changes in attitude, is that they appear to have given a greenlight to the SWG EMU project. -- --) Eric |

This seems much more likely. LucasArts probably knows that SWG has been on its last legs for a while. Their decision to reconstruct the gameplay multiple times pretty much turned off even the most die-hard Star Wars fans, and I'm sure they know that they're not getting any of those players back ever again. -- Icemage |

I don't know, a lot of people bitched and complained about it, but from what I've seen (my gf's mom plays religiously, i swear she knows everyone in the entire game personally. .. she has the fastest computer in the house, lives in our basement, and her computer only has: windows, and swg, and she hardly ever -leaves- the basement) very few people actually left. I've looked at what the game was before the current "enhancement", and I don't think I would've wanted to play it at all before. I still don't want to play it now, but at least I could see NOW how star wars fans actually could play it. GF and GF's mom were not starwars fans when they picked it up.. they picked it up because it wasn't a fantasy MMO. -- --) Eric |

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure ESF did get approached in the past about it, and they had to go in and change all of these things so they wouldn't get shut down. Now, they're supported by Funimation, though I'm sure they're only going to let that one go free. -- "He who fights with monsters might take care lest he thereby become a monster." |
