It is pretty annoying to get caught up with a C&D slap. But, more times than not, mod teams are willing to change the content needed to make their mod different than the license. Of course, then they're labeled as rip-offs for looking like the said game -- "He who fights with monsters might take care lest he thereby become a monster." |

HOW DID I FORGET THAT >_< GODZ managed to play like a dbz mod without totally looking like one, and the mod looks unique and stylish, and has gargoyles! Pure originality brings fresh air every time. |

Let's get back on subject, peoples. I was actually discouraged to see the Chrono Trigger Recreation project getting shut down. I was so excited to see it getting a 3D update, especially since there were rumors of the game being updated to the new consoles, but turns out it was one big lie. I hope someone out there gets away with doing it someday. It sort of ruins any of my plans to attempt to recreate a classic game -- "He who fights with monsters might take care lest he thereby become a monster." |

It sucks that these mods are been closed down by the money hungry corporates but the truth at the end of the day which is what worries these corporates is that more often than not the mod mimicing their game is better than the original. and thats a scary prospect for them! -- Scott Reismanis |

Games Workshop/Warhammer 40k are pretty liberal I think, as long as you stress it is a fan work. But then again they have computer games now, so who knows.... |

The main reasons why the companys shut down these mods is because people can go buy the game that the mod is for, and then get the mod. Your basically getting 2 games in one see? I'm all for Games Workshops course of action (C&D if no permission is asked for). If I was going to make a mod based on a game or anything, I would of course ask for permission before attempting to get a good start on it. |

It's funny when a couple of people over the net can make a much better mod then some big multi million dollar company can make the original game -- ShadowLore profile: Moddb.com |

Well shadow, that is because the few people over the net drive with talent and commitment, the company drives with money, sure they may hire a few somewhat talented people but, I've never seen a "game design college graduate" that could impress me, while I'm half startled at the skills of the general community. Companies run on the basis of money, work schedules, audience targetting, so on, that interferes. Plus, modifications are not as interested in developing new features for engines as much as new features in gameplay, people still play Half-Life modifications, CS, DoD, TS, and of course Natural-Selection stands as a great example of innovative gameplay. Anyway, I respect intellectual properties, the Wheel of Time I'm sort of hinting at now, I began with a lengthy message to Tor Fantasy asking if it would be alright and giving a fair synopsis, as well as "negotiating" with them as to why it would be a good idea to let us do it, it doesn't cost them anything, we won't be handing out their products, and we will produce a title that will get more fanbase to them, its the most cost effective business tactic available. Of course, were I to merely begin making it and going off on our own tangent without them, it wouldn't be recieved nearly as well. Lots of companies don't enjoy little infringements on their properties, most of all video game development companies, it supposedly turns people away from their own sales. Plus, you need to understand, they most often consider modifications to be a child's hobby sort of thing, so, they'd see it as a negative to have others working on those properties. |

well shadowy... this is the big world of open source... and with this i don't mean the mod having it's source open, i talk of the spirit behind it... and this spirit drowns companies if it has to. |

well when/if I finish the book that I am writting you can make all the mods you want based on it. I think it would help sales of it. -- "I may not know anything but at least I am smarter then 90% of the people out there." yep... especially those taking on ideas of others (don't get me wrong, it's not an attack) insetad of coming up with their own ones. using characters/stories of companies is a very dangerous thing. be better creative and you stay away from this all. |
