Consoles: The PC Killer | Locked | |

Okay I have heard this mentioned many times in different magazines and even now on tech tv and quite frankly this is starting to piss me off I have not yet found a console game I liked better than a pc game and I have not met many people that preffered console games over pc games. I think all these opinions are wrong, or am I wrong and just in denial that the gaming console could eventually out-do a computer? I dunno it seems to me that Computer games are getting better and better every day and console games really only get better about every 2 years. What is your opinion on this? --

It cant outdo a computer because it is a computer except set specifically for gaming. look at the xbox, a computer with a pretty box basically |

a computer with a bad OS... a rip of win2k and a fuked up dx8 (i guess it's ... nah... in general pc owns console, no doubt. there are situations where a console is better, or lets call it easier, but in the end on a pc you've got more input-possibilities than on a console... where you have to find them first if existing |

Consoles are easier for casual gamers to use because the games will work no matter what on the console your purchase. Its not a matter of games, more a manner of hardware and available options to you with the console you own. |

well, to those who can't affoard to upgrade their pc, consoles are a great alternative. --

wrong... those who upgrade are benchmark hippies... so far i had no real reason for upgrading (unless i tried out Dolphin and alike... console emulators)... especially since there is no game out there that hooked me (DeusEx2 was crap, UT2k4 was crap, and more). |

Consoles are actually starting to get better than PCs, since all of the Triple A titles are being ported to the three platforms. They're getting Battlefield, Call of Duty, Far Cry, Half-Life 2, Doom 3, Medal of Honor, The Sims, Everquest.... you can't see it now, but PC Gaming is losing some of its ground. This Fall, it's guaranteed that consoles are going to have a much better line-up than the PC. Besides, Halo squashes a lot of FPS games on the computer, due in part to a great control scheme and great gameplay. It's hard to find any PC game that beats Halo's multiplayer. -- "He who fights with monsters might take care lest he thereby become a monster." |

I think if/when high definition tvs get more popular then consoles will really start to take off. |
||
Aug 1 2004 Anchor | ||
Indeed, more and more games are supporting high definition. I believe Ninja Gaiden and Hitman 3 on Xbox both do, as well as NCAA 2005 (if I'm not mistaken). When HDTV becomes big enough, consoles could possibly take over the PC market. I think the only categories that PC will always dominate in are FPS and RTS. You really can't beat a keyboard and mouse with that. |
||
Aug 1 2004 Anchor | ||
Well, what if the consoles release mouses and keyboards? Would that fit your need? lol -- "He who fights with monsters might take care lest he thereby become a monster." |
||

Then the only thing separating console from PC would be the monitor/TV issue. That is incredibly lame. There needs to be a distinct difference between the two. Why buy a console if it's the same thing as a PC? |
||
Aug 1 2004 Anchor | ||
Why play games on the PC when you can play them on the console, which has a lot less hassle lugging around than a PC, since you most likely have to carry your monitor as well. Not to mention, you can't have big multiplayer matches with your friends on a single computer -- "He who fights with monsters might take care lest he thereby become a monster." |

I don't see the consoles outweighing the PC in every realm. FPS and RTS games still own on the PC, because a simple controller can't suffice for all the navigation and flow of an FPS game, or the commands of an RTS game. They both have their advantages. Sports games and party games are always best on console, as are adventure games (sometimes). I don't think either of them are strong enough to consider removing one from the industry. PCs were here first anyways. |
||

Well, PCs themselves will never be removed, but the gaming part is slowing down. You can't see it, because it's happening at a slow rate. Soon, though, consoles will outweigh the PC. That'll probably start to show when PC games and console games are both released the same day, as a multi-platform release. Then you will begin to notice. -- "He who fights with monsters might take care lest he thereby become a monster." |

i just say one thing: X-Box. |
||
|
Aug 1 2004 Anchor | |
But i dont think you will ever be able to mod console games. So i would say pc games will be around for a long time |
||
Aug 1 2004 Anchor | ||
Perhaps what they mean is the price range and availibilty for gamers like whereas a good gaming computer can run between 600-4500 bucks an xbox or ps2 is only about 100-200 bucks and also most computers weigh quite a substantial bit more than Playstations or Xbox, even the Fragbox weighs 16 pounds which is probably twice or three times the weight of a playstation. I dunno I just dont know why all these magazines and shows would say this? --

xbox is basically a computer in and of itself. But it cant do anything except play games. So i really dont see the point in one. All of the big titles such as doom3 wont be the same as the pc version because it wont be able to handle as much on the looks. never mind the blocky controls.. The console was made for sports games, gta, racing games (i dont consider that a sport) - Edited By carni On Sun 1st, Aug 2004 @ 2:13:27pm |

yep... no doubt about that, well I think MS is kinda like Valve they think they are doing something right but it always turns out horribly wrong and everyone dies! --

i say games are fing games, you either play them or hate them, dont matter what where or when you play them, as long as you do, and also consoles, are good for the traveling gamer, pc's allow for better performance. -- snetErz.com - Web Design |

@spector: yeah... just played today a bit DX2 just out of boredom... aside the lighting which is nice the game itself really sux major balls... i want back Target-Mod/EnergyRecycler-Mod... i want back the Capability-System... i want back the awesome GUI... *sad*... might DX3 be better? @arghvark: it's perhaps a bit difficult to say what console or computer wiped out what first. an Atari for me is a computer, not a console, and a lot of games redone tousand times have come from there. But then too... is a Comodore 64 a computer or a console? i would label it as computer, you had a keyboard, a tape desk and such. donno how you all see this but i think the consoles really deverged just around the time where those 'computers' just became a small box with a gamepad in front of it and a tv backend. |
