lol let me try this again...ill just link Img147.imageshack.us how does this forum do images im used to the [IMG]well anyway this is very! early version of a piece classified in the warlord field a little context for you this is a soldier belonging to a branch of an alternate human timeline they are called fowl'hume they were men that millions of years ago did unthinkable deeds so with the wisdom of an ancient court they never killed them granting them rest they took there skin and the majority of there bodies and made them live forever and then they became watchdogs of the graves of kings (a planet filled with enormous statues and monuments) only thinking about about the majesty and purity of the world they were commanded to protect so for a million years the fowl'hume watchdogs sat and waited surrounded by there shame and there regret until one day humans from earth (different timeline but same species) came to snatch the beautiful and healthy planet but were confronted and stopped by only a handful of fowl'hume watch dogs this watchdog 's name is dunkiev he was the cause of an interplanetary genocide campaign and he is the most aggressive of all the fowl'hume |

Jesus, people have written incredibly stupid things in this thread. Can it get locked, before more nonsense comes out? I think its clear to the last mollusk now what concept art is and what is wanted in this competition. --

here is another update i don't know how people feel about the frquency of posts but ive always found that the critics/other artists like to see what process i use to conceptualize my stuff but in this i made alot of changes to the head and arms and im now going to work on the back ground a lighting scheme also i have to conceptualize the soldier being decapitated i have to make the 2 very different and im still a little iffy on how the main characters armor is going to look due to its age and due to its creation of another type of humanity |

I just read over the forum, and maybe locking it would be a bad idea |

yes i really don't understand why they got mad at my post. i honestly was just asking questions. besides this thread's supposed to be for works-in-progress, not solely for clarifications. i've never liked forum fights either, and i never start one. so i'm cool. btw, operation_sleepwalk, very nice -- Dreams of things that will never be, |

Technically, concept art is anything that gets across an idea for a visual art asset. Sometimes, since we haven't had any concept artists on our mod for a long time, our modellers do blocky model concepts to rough out ideas and help us visualise their concept before the design gets finalised and production goes ahead. That way we discuss it and make sure that if it's a model the player intereacts with it has visual features that will hint at the player as to what it is, what it can be used for, and how it can be used. But even when one of our main concept artists was working on the mod, he occasionally did some model work to get basic shapes for a city block and then did paintovers. I think it depends how much emphasis you put on the two sides of the name 'concept/art'. If you're more concerned with getting an idea across, usually the artistic side isn't as important. The main exception here is when you're doing a piece of CA that is for more than 1 thing, like a setting with the players, their equipment, the world, the mood. This kind of 'concept' needs to be much deeper and more rounded, so the 'art' side and the 'concept' side are both equally important. I'm guessing this competition is more about the 'art' side, since it would be too difficult to judge whether a concept is well communicated as the initial concept would need to be detailed in length for a suitable assessment to be made. No matter how you make it, as was often stressed - as long as you draw, paint, or sketch out your OWN work and present it. I do think concepts using 3D assets are interesting and often have a cool look to them and I don't see why anyone wouldn't be allowed to participate with that kind of art. I just think its necessary to make sure they actually produced all the content presented. Yet, this kind of work needs a lot of post-production to get model and background into a good correspondance, so in fact its much harder to produce than just 2D art. I was probably too early asking about closing the thread. I just thought noone can possibly have any more questions after all we know now. AStepintoOblivion - you do have great skills. Originality...I don't know yet, but I can see you know your work and take it seriously. Wasn't trying to insult you, I'm just a grumpy old man. If you took it that way, I'm sorry! @SinKing: I'm sorry too if i came off looking like a jerk by trying to use our game universe. I just like our universe too much, hehe. And thanks, I do hope so. LOL, coz I really need a new PC, as my current 4-year old clunker one severely restricts me learning more about graphics As for using 3d assets, let's just wait for INtense's update @Crispy: It was what I was trying to clarify too. I too use what I call "3d Concepting", just having fun with meshes and trying to see the possibilities in the shapes. In fact, one of the largest project I've worked on, the Darsalaam Trade Station, was based entirely on what started as boredom and playing with some polies on max Hope this clears up the air here. LOL. As Plinkotink said: lets keep things positive people! -- Dreams of things that will never be, |

You do work like this on a crappy rack? Impressive! You seem to be one of the few people really engaging in the contest and I should be more than happy with that. Perhaps you could have just shown some skills before hand. I wouldn't have made any stupid comments then. I'm wishing you luck with the contest and I believe you can win one of the Alienwares, if you keep working like that! --

Just to clarify something before I post a WIP or continue on it. Themes seem to be mostly sci-fi oriented but with my concept I want to take on the "Noir" theme in a different way, interpreting it in the way of "dark", "shady". It's more medieval oriented. So does this work out or does the "noir" theme only apply to "film noir" stuff? |

Keep the concept art coming, looking strong so far. Ok so the official word is that 3D concept art will be accepted provided all assets, models, landscapes used are original and created for this competition. This applies to all artwork - it must be a "concept piece" which fits one of the themes and is totally new created specifically for the competition. |

i picked up on this from the conceptart.org link and was cramming to get my piece done before i left country for a week. i was gonna dramatically slide into home, sending it off before i left and getting back a day after the deadline had passed... and now all my perfect timing, has been destroyed X_X... now i have 20 days to polish/look at a finished piece and adding backgrounds to pictures that were intended to standalone isn't too much fun /wine but im excited to see what will come of this! -- michaelkingery.com |

An explosion can look in many ways, depending on the structure of the thing blowing up, and what blows it up. |

Theme is riot control, I'd assume that it's either a missile hitting a building or a grenade blowing up. Just answering for Blighted |

OMG 3d submissions oh man thats sux i mean in the sense that the competition will be much stiffer and that there will be a much wider range of artists and art its going to be great though too see the 2 methods clash both sides being equally creative but more difficult in many different ways i dont know about you guys but its going to very very insightful to see what things people like and appreciate as art due to the fact that in many circumstances those that create and those whom critique do not share similar appreciation because the consumer knows nothing about the process only the result |
