Hi my name is PoorLittleIndieMaker but you make now me as Kris or PoorLittlePig (depending if you know me in real person) anyway. I really do need help finding some good free modelling programs (already heard of blender and not a big fan of it). The models are supposed to be in some of my games that i plan to make with softwares like unity and unity. Now I'm asking you guys and girls (of course) to help me on this epic quest. Thanks for your patience. :de: :duck:

If you haven't used Blender in a few years, you may want to check it out again as they recently did a overhaul on the UI. A few years back, I wasn't a fan of it either, but the new UI really changed that.

I like 3dcoat.

Its a modeling program but you use voxles so you have little restrictions when developing the asset.

3d-coat.com
The policy on the 3D-Coat Educational version have been changed. We offer 3D-Coat to students, hobbyists and amateurs pursuing non-commercial goals, so as senior people and unemployed at $99 US.

free for students and "cheap" on the commercial side is the new Maya LT. I am absolutely happy to have switched from XSI to Maya and the LT version is a fraction of the cost of, let's say 3Ds Max. If you get a student account, you can also download all other Autodesk products.

Of course they want you to keep using their software and buy expensive updates every year, but all-in-all I feel like Autodesk is taking the right steps with Maya, making it the favored tool to integrate game middleware and being user-friendly, at the same time. I really enjoy Maya, and it looks like it's getting the most attention out of all Autodesk modeling software now.

hmm Makehuman is good for human model starters , I think a free version of sketch up isn't a bad option and if you add the obj exporter option to it you can export it as an object to blender and save it as almost any game model format.
Milkshape is another option that is largely ignored and is a rather cheap nice option (has many export import options), Daz 3d has actual 3d modelling options and is easy and fast also, Metsqueotia has some nice options but formats are restricted (some apps can convert it to other formats)
Bryce .. not great but free versions available , Gmax free like max but really obsolete (also renx), Meshlab free open source and multitudes of export options, netfab ( is good for fixing some bad meshes) , voodoo for photo to object capture , brekle for pointclouds and mesh capture from Kinect, meh so many options that are cheap.

Expensive nice options : Zbrush ,3ds max , maya , and pro daz versions.

My faves : Meshlab , Sketchup with the ruby export obj free option , Daz 3d.

Thanks everyone for all of the response. Sorry for the late response btw:nervous: but anyway. I decided to go with blender after all. Been using it for a couple years now LOL. Anyway feel free to look at Mini Mafioso in the future. The game will be free and will be powered with Unity game engine becuase it us going to be a Third Person or a First Person game.

Milkshape and Lightwave. Or blender.

Yep, you made a good choice, I'm using Blender myself. Started using it back when it was 2.4 something version and was very upset when they changed to new features basically redesigning everything, changing interface and the way it operates completely just after I got used to all the shortcuts and started being very productive using them. I did use Milkshape before, but Blender, apart from being free and open source, is way better in every way. I did try Maya and 3DS, but Blender is better in my opinion. Could be because I never managed to learn Maya and 3DS in the same way I did Blender to be able to do things in a short time.

Having worked with both Maya and Blender, Blender makes unwrapping objects so, so much easier than Maya. Good choice.

My model is now rigged and I will animate everything today

If you want to create 3D model you can use software's like Blender,3Ds Max,MAYA..ETC. And create 3D models, texturing and lighting using these software's
For creating 3D objects you can use 2D graphics images as a reference but you have to create 3D objects by your own.3Ds Max needs technical expertise as it produces High End product.

I've used Maya and Lightwave myself and I found they each have their own merits and downfalls.
You can get Maya for free on autodesk education site. You just need to tell them you're in school and you get the free 3yr educational license, which beats the $3000 if you ask me
:)
