Why Should I Play

Bailter Ray

Bailter Ray has had a very sneaky release on ModDB, creating a profile with all the media and downloads intact and since then nothing else has been added, it has not escaped my eyes though and I must say initial impressions where very high for this mod. Having a filled out profile with great looking work with a focused art direction, what more could I hope to ask for? Well for starters the gameplay has touched on a genre that most mods tend to over-look, that is the Metroid style games. I.e. a 2D platformer built around a semi-sandbox universe. Granted that Bailter Ray does not have any powerups, pickups, hidden rooms or multiple objectives but it has captured that feeling really well. The project as it stands right now is a game prototype for Unreal Tournament 3 made in 12 weeks as a student project in the RMIT's Game Program.

You play as tin spaceman Captain Phoenix Valentine, an Astro-Explorer who has crashed onto an alien planet. The sole objective for Captain Phoenix is to find his spaceships power supply which happens to be a wind up key and the spaceship itself. In-between Captain Phoenix and his salvation is a maze made up of an alien landscape filled with platforming puzzles and enemy AI. The AI takes the form of both turret like plants which shoot fire and goo and patrolling robots who would rather shoot lasers at you then stop and chat. Players can navigate the environment in your standard 2D side scrolling ways (X and Y), with jumping and shooting feeling quite natural using the WASD keys to move while leaving the mouse to aim and fire Captain Phoenix's trusty ray gun. It seems quite a bit of TLC has been put into the player movements as double jumping with the rocket boots has a very honest feel about them, this is the same for the overall abilities of Captain Phoenix. The coolest move in the Captains skill-set is the ability to dodge projectiles on the Z axis, pressing space bar at the correct time will have Phoenix sidesteping into the background, it both looks awesome and has a real benefit to the gameplay.

Since Bailter Ray is a prototype mod its almost expected that the experience wouldn't last all that long, it is a very short game but that should not stop you from downloading and experiencing what BR has to offer. If anything supporting these guys with this release should hopefully help them to create a more fleshed out experience, because the developers really do have something cool going on here.

You mean side-scrolling. This has nothing to do with 2D.

The gameplay is mainly 2dimensional.. So it is somewhat a 2D game. Just not graphically.

As long as you can feel depth it's 3d. Doesn't matter where camera is placed. At least that's how I understand it.

Lets just call it the usual 2.5D shall we? (for arguement sake!) And leave it at that! ;)

It's like calling Shadow Complex 2d. Its far from it and 2d is nothing close to being right. 2d and 3d is defined by visual depth, not playable depth.

Sidescrollers still have a lot of potential even in this age (Even retail sidescrollers on the way). I'd love to see this idea expanded on.

I can't get my astroboy to jump
I have an azerty layout keyboard
and if I bind the forward key to Z instead of W
I should be able to jump,
wich I'm not
I'll try to play switching my keyboard settings in the meanwhile
but it's something pretty annoying
pls fix this in an upcoming version orso

other then that, the game looks awesome

Bailter Ray has not been tested with a azerty keyboard layout. You could try switching keyboard settings or bind them to your preferred configuration (custom bindings have not been tested either and may not work. You could use a game pad controller.
We will look at a fix for any upcoming versions.

Glad you liked it, we hope to make it more satisfying :-)
At the moment Bailter Ray is only a sand box prototype level, we have plans for two more levels and are adding power ups, collectable items, a new robot enemy and lots of new environmental staticmeshes. Bailter Ray is a work in progress we have small team but expect two more levels by late September.

Looks great, and with two more levels and a few features, this could turn out to be a classic for UT3. Either way, this is great work for a student of game design. You definitely have good horizons, AudioAlias.

Really impressive and deep for a student game, it seems. Can't wait to check it out.

First off, great mod! The controls fell very smooth, and the movement is awesome. It seems like a something that can actually be released for retail(of course when you have a full game) I loved it and I played through it many many times now. Add more levels and it's a perfect mod :)
