E3 isn't all about the big-budget, triple-A releases and first-party platform exclusives. In the past few years, platform holders have brought more and more indie titles to the forefront in their press conferences and E3 booth spaces, thanks to their newfound interest in bringing indie titles to console. In this roundup, we look at those such indie games who made their appearances in this year's E3, right alongside the triple-A console games themselves.

Unto The End

2 Ton Studios

"Unto The End is a 2D cinematic combat-adventure that charts a journey of loss and vengeance, told through unforgiving encounters, skillful combat, and stark moments of beauty. Fight your way through an indifferent wilderness as you search for the creature that has taken everything from you ... Your family is slaughtered. You could not protect them. You wake. You survived. Vengeance is all that remains…"

Valfaris

Steel Mantis

"After mysteriously vanishing from galactic charts, the fortress of Valfaris has suddenly reappeared in the orbit of a dying sun. Once a self-contained paradise, the grandiose citadel now plays host to an ever-growing darkness. Therion, a fearless and proud son of Valfaris, returns to his home to uncover the truth of its doomed fate and to challenge the arcane evil at its very heart."

The Last Night

Odd Tales

"The Last Night immerses you in the everyday life of Charlie, a second-class citizen living in a city brimming with augmentation and citizens living a gamified existence -- none of which Charlie can experience himself due to a childhood accident. Apathetic and disheartened by the seemingly pointless world around him, Charlie is presented with an opportunity to take matters into his own hands. But at what risk?"

Undertale (PS4 + PS Vita)

Toby Fox

"The PC classic UNDERTALE comes to PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita! Explore a rich RPG world full of strange and delightful characters where violence isn’t the only answer. Dance with a slime...pet a dog...whisper your favorite secret to a knight...or ignore all of that and rain destruction upon your foes. The choices are yours—but are you determined enough to prevail?"

Cuphead

Studio MDHR

"Cuphead is a classic run and gun action game heavily focused on boss battles. Inspired by cartoons of the 1930s, the visuals and audio are painstakingly created with the same techniques of the era, i.e. traditional hand drawn cel animation, watercolor backgrounds, and original jazz recordings. Play as Cuphead or Mugman (in single player or local co-op) as you traverse strange worlds, acquire new weapons, learn powerful super moves, and discover hidden secrets while you try to pay your debt back to the devil!"

"Xbox One and Windows 10 exclusive. From the creators of the multi-award winning "Ori and the Blind Forest" comes the highly anticipated sequel: "Ori and the Will of the Wisps.” Embark on an all new adventure to discover the mysteries beyond the forest of Nibel, uncover the hidden truths of those lost, and unravel Ori's true destiny."

The Artful Escape

Beethoven and Dinosaur

"The game follows Francis Vendetti, a teenage musician desperately seeking to sever the connection between him and his uncle; a dead folk singer of megalithic cultural significance. After encounters with Violetta, a laser artist returning home from California, and Lightman, proprietor of Lightman's Reptile and Telescope Emporium, Francis understands he must leave his everyday self behind... and become someone else entirely."

Tacoma

Fullbright

"The Venturis Corporation wants their AI back. That’s where you come in. Tacoma is a narrative adventure set aboard a high-tech space station in the year 2088. As you go about your mission, you’ll explore every detail of how the station’s crew lived and worked, finding the clues that add up to a gripping story of trust, fear, and resolve in the face of disaster."

Finally, Microsoft's press conference contained a montage of new games coming to the Xbox One through ID @ Xbox, Microsoft's indie game and porting initiative. The quick-fire trailer is above, with some of the games running in 4K on the new Xbox One X. Games appearing in the montage include Surviving Mars, Unruly Heroes, ASTRONEER, Robocraft Infinity, Observer, We Happy Few, Dunk Lords, Brawlout, Ooblets, Hello Neighbour, Ashen, Riverbond, and Shift.

I agree. Makes you wonder what "indie" even means anymore when these games rival AAA looks!

Cool to witness...and even more excited to play!

The Last Night does look beautiful, and as a big fan of Ori and the Blind Forest looking forward to playing Will of the Wisps.

... wait.... a tick... If Undertale is coming to the PS4 console, does that mean there will be a gamepad function update added to the PC and Steam version???
