Best Single Player Mod

Although multiplayer mods hog most of the spotlight on ModDB, there's still a number of dedicated modders focusing on creating a single player experience. The nominees for this category are the editors' best 2008 highlights for excellence in single player releases.

The Ball

Unreal Tournament 3

Toltec_Studios wrote:The Ball is a single player action and puzzle mod for Unreal Tournament 3. It competes in the MakeSomethingUnreal Contest, and it has won a double first prize in Phase 1 (Best Gametype - Best Use of Physics). The Ball offers an adventure that puts you in the boots of a geologist who gets stuck in a cavern and bumps onto an ancient and Toltec complex holding a mysterious ball. While making your way through the internal workings of ancient ziggurats, golden cities, and huge caverns, your only companion is a giant gold and metal-shelled ball, a mysterious artifact in its own right, that you use to make your way through a series of rooms and caverns, and to crush enemies with. As you progress through the mod, slowly the real purpose of this gigantic Toltec complex becomes clear, and you are sucked into a thousands of years old story of betrayal and secrecy.

Kreedz Climbing

Half-Life 2

Kreedz_Climbing wrote:Kreedz Climbing is a unique, non-violent, puzzle-type, 3D-First Person View game where the player attempts jumping and 17 other disciplines like shooting flare targets, racing vehicles, surfing, bungee, bunnyhop, longjump, or sliderace until he/she reaches the top (or end) of any given environment. In Kreedz Climbing no map is the same and can vary with any combination of these skills. It's a race against time and against other players with any discipline in the game.

Portal: Prelude

Portal:_Prelude wrote:Portal: Prelude, as its name states it, is an unofficial prequel to the game Portal. Its story revolves around the pre-GlaDOS epoch, even before she was plugged in. At this time, test subjects were monitored by real Aperture Science employees, whose work was tedious, lengthy and repetitive. This is why they decided to build a great artificial intelligence that could both replace them in these difficult tasks, and also take responsibility for many other tasks within the complex and compete with Black Mesa's superiority. All employees of the Aperture Science complex are now eagerly awaiting GlaDOS. Maybe even a little too eagerly, as the upcoming events will tell... This game is totally free. It offers a bit more gameplay hours than the original Portal, with 8 chapters, 19 test chambers, 48 challenges, 6 advanced maps, a brand new storyline and more than 400 lines of english speech with dozens of subtitles translations.

The Delta Sector

Far Cry

PlatinumGold wrote:The Delta Sector is a modification for FarCry which will meet the highest quality expectations and will use the full capacity of the Cryengine 1. There will be new weapons, new vehicles and new enimies in this mod. You are a member of a special forces team. It's your job to check what's happen in eastern europe, because many military forces accumulate in one area.

I voted for P:P, but The Ball is making me wish I owned UT3. It reminds me a little of the last chapter of HL2 combined with puzzles.

the ball is a cool and fun mod but the reason it won (i think)
is because it uses the realtime physics from the unreal engine 3
(and it won the the $1.000.000,- unreal contest)

Thanks everyone and ModDb, we are very happy to have won!

The current release of The Ball was only our second release so far so we are still in the process of ramping up the mod and all of its features. Our third release in May is going to be twice as big, and will have a large number of new features and even more polish.

In the upcoming release we will be introducing enemies you can crush by rolling over them, a new environment style for some variation and some grander environments, secret areas, and we will start introducing our background story through all the levels. We are also redesigning the levels of this last release pretty drastically to make the puzzles even more fun and spread out our features better.

Also a congrats to the runner ups!

Congratulations Hourences! Good job on your hard work. and to ModDB well chosen :) It was fun watching this happen from afar.

I also am not sure why we were chosen for SP truthfully but...
What many do not know about Kreedz Climbing is that we sometimes have tournaments online. This was the original goal but some linux issues have stopped this for a time. I agree it's a single player game basicly because there is no team you play with tactically towards a common goal. 90% of the game is ,yes.....played alone....although playing alone with some cool people on a server with perfect ping from anywhere in the world is more fun. You can compete directly with someone or many others in your own "home made" tournaments which gives it a slight multiplayer thing because:

In UT or any other multiplayer actually play alone against ALL on the server (Your skill against theirs like Golf)....just like we do with the exception that our end scores are time based rather than on kills/deaths. Players DO compete online against each other in our game. The World Records list is the single player part of our slightly difficult to understand Race-Puzzle-type game concept.

I also get the feeling that Single player = a game that you play against computer AI solve many missions and boom yer might have a multiplayer whuich means the game has extra maps or parts of maps....where you play against other real players.

So technically we ARE both.
Thanks for the fun!

Congratz Hourences, your definately one of the best level designers in the world atm. Also love what you did with The Chronicles of Spellborn.
Your levels are always breathtaking.

From what it looked like, Kreedz Climbing was a multiplayer game since it had active servers.
