Every summer, gamers go through a debilitating drought. The well of releases worth playing slows to a trickle and many are left to do nothing more than drool over the titles planned for release next holiday season. It's during this time that many gamers come to ModDB to satiate their gaming appetites. They search high and low for something that will pique their interest.

While the MOTY Awards provide a wealth of choices among mods and indie games, they usually overlook gaming gems within our community released in the first half of the year. To combat this oversight, ModDB has launched the Summer of Mods & Indies event! Featuring exclusive content from all the major releases of the last 6 months, gamers are bound to find something to quench their thirst.

The Summer of Mods & Indies provides much needed exposure to mods and indie games in order to help them connect with their potential audiences. If you'd like to participate in this year's event, your too late... entries closed on July 15th. Instead sit back, thank the presenting sponsor US Air Force, and prepare to be bombarded with exclusive content from the best mods and indies from the first 6 months of the year.

Savage 2: A Tortured Soul 2.1 - somewhat new, improved and better than ever!

Posted by on

The majority of gamers have their blinders on, always looking towards the next upcoming releases. Coverage across games is the same, the only time a look back seems warranted is when a new update to a franchise is imminent. In the case of indie games however, there's always a boatload of gamers out that have yet to become aware a lot of indie games exist. Savage 2 is one of those titles. Brought to you by the same developers that put together its IGF (among others) award-winning predecessor, the game has received numerous updates. After a tumultuous launch, Savage 2 obtained a small but dedicated following. Thanks to continued developer support though, the game underwent many changes that have resulted in the solid experience people are still discovering over a year since its release. Here's the kicker, the game can be enjoyed for free.

ModDB is proud to present this coverage of Savage 2: A Tortured Soul to in hopes of exposing as many players as possible to it. Over the next coming days, we'll dole out features that showcase the depth of strategy and tactics straight from the developers. By the end, we hope you'll try out the game for yourself and discover just how much of a genre-bending, action-packed romp it really is.

Before we get down to the details of how to eviscerate your foes, here's a little backstory of the game: in the lands of Newerth, both humans and beasts wage war for supremacy. In the course of battles, both sides will use strength, cunning, and magic to best each other. However, the lands of Newerth contain a hidden, untapped power trapped deep underground — the Hellbourne. In their race to claim superiority both humans and beasts will stop at nothing to unlock this menace to use for their own means. Such is the battle for Newerth.

At the core of Savage 2 is its melee combat which has gone through a number of iterations with help from the community. When combined with RTS, FPS, and RPG elements you'll find it offers deep competitive experience with a fantasy environment. It's a wholly unique experience that's taken a long time to mature and refine. Now that it has hit its prime development-wise, it's worth taking a look or re-discovering.

Stay tuned as we reveal more Savage 2 footage in the coming days, or you can download it now to test it out for yourself. S2 Games also runs a live stream for the game on Justin.tv (4pm EST, GMT-5) three days a week, where you can ask developers and community members questions.

30 second commercial? Are you series? like 10-15 seconds is SOMEWHAT bearable but 30 seconds? Do you know how long that is just waiting for the commercial to end? This is totally unacceptable. Not only that, I just hit F5 on accident and I had to watch it again! (AKA use cookies)

Otherwise yes, I'm re-downloading savage now.

Also, there is no difference between HD and SD. If it's only SD why even display the logos to change between? Atleast thats something the 3 year olds who wrote the YouTube video player did. :)

yea i was ******* ****** the first time i saw a commercial. but what really ****** me off is that all these video sites with ads have them implemented so horribly. you can tell they were an afterthought. the entire system used to present the ads is completely bug ridden. for instance, when i was watching this particular vid, the ad started right in the middle of the trailer! luckily, they dont have the ads on every single vid... yet.

anyways... i'm looking forward to trying this out!

Please keep this discussion to Savage 2. But to answer, running a video system is a complicated beast and something we required help with. The ads will be refined with time (you will not see them often) and should allow us to improve it by upping the quality. If you have issues please let us know support@moddb.com

It's true that adds can be annoying. But try to have a little patience. Do you realize that Moddb and the Mod's that use it don't make money off of the things they do. I don't know for sure, but I bet any money they make off of adds help to supplement the costs of keeping the site up. So before bitching think about what you're getting for free, and enjoy the kick *** game you can play for free. (:

I'm sure they will figure out the video stuff. They just released this new version of Moddb. So give them time.

Yea, I'd definitely recommend checking out the changelist (and also stay tuned for some of the upcoming features here on ModDB). Tons of changes and additions have arrived since the release.

I have been playing Savage 2 again online and it does have a LOT of improvements. I suggest everyone give it a try as it definitely is worth the download. These guys really have done a great job developing it.

I don't think you understand. Savage is a Multiplayer game. The other players in the server are your army.

@archkyrie: These be humans under your command! Regardless of whether they're playing Humans or Beasts! Rawr!

Generally your team will want you to stay in the commander chair, but someone will generally take over if you decide to resign.

@NullSoldier: I'm glad you like it! We worked really hard to get the game where it is now.

alright, that is what i wanted to know. i was aware that it was multiplayer, but no matter where i looked i had a hard time figuring if it was a 1 vs kinda game or if it was actually a game including multiple teammates. maybe i just never looked in the right places.

well, that answered my question, and that is exactly what i wanted to know because if (or more like 'when') i play this game, i doubt i'll touch the commanders chair.

The combat has a pretty nice mesh of techniques and abilities that make 1v1 and 1vMany combat pretty interesting. Also, there's generally always someone who'll be willing to take the commander spot, so if you're not too keen on that, no worries.

@ archkyrie, i play the game so my opinion in terms of the team falling apart, even without a commander players can fill the role by being builders and can construct all buildings, this option only becomes available to the builder once there is no commander. however only the commander can buff.

Wait.. it's free? :/
I always thought it looked interesting, but I didn't want to spent money on it because I wasn't sure if the quality of the game was high enough.
I guess I'll find out soon.. ^^

Yup, no purchase required, ever. However, if you really enjoy Savage 2, I'd recommend upgrading to a Prime account - it helps us support the game and paves the way for making a third Savage game possible.

This is the worst game I've ever played... the beast team (or whatever they are called) has much better soldiers (bat like creatures which can block forever and have a super fast, super powerful attack), it tries to mix too many aspects of different games together in a multiplayer game to make an experience that is impossible to enjoy each specific thing offered. And, with the constant "pay to do this!" I just feel like people get an unfair advantage by paying. I'd say, play multiple games which give experiences that focus on a single thing (like RPG, or shooter, or commander with soldiers, which tends to be a shooter anyway) for a much more rich few hours of wasted life.

Sorry it didn't appeal to you Mavis.
A QUICK explanation of what you saw...
The Hunter(Bat)unit CAN be taken down easily. What you saw was good block usage. You really have to block a swing or 2 from these guys THEN dodge around behind(or to the side) to get around their block & REALLY hit 'em hard for the extra damage you deal from behind. They are a slower unit & one of the only ones with no 'real' ranged attack. use these things to your advantage ;) If it's getting to heavy, dash back & fire a few rounds into them, lure them into the path of an arrow tower etc, etc...
On the other hand, they have a nice, wide block, but it all evens out & you really have to understand the units strengths & weaknesses.
Once it 'clicks' MANY people see the beauty of Mixing these Genres & giving gamers a unique take on multiplayer gaming & a breath of FRESH AIR.(just read some of the other comments.)
Sorry if this wasn't the game for you.

Mavis, can you tell us your Savage 2 player name? Maybe that will provide some insight on your Savage 2 experience that we can learn from (I can grab replays from the matches you were in and have a look at how things went).

To clarify, all player classes (Human, Beast, and Hellbourne) follow the same melee system. You might have encountered a player who was adept with it - they can sometimes seem invulnerable until you become comfortable with the system. Among other effects, successfully blocking an enemy player's attack increases the regeneration rate of your guard (block) meter, allowing you to block additional attacks. Of course, that guard meter regeneration only occurs when not attempting to block enemy attacks (forcing players to perform another action such as attacking or maneuvering). This is just one of the many elements of Savage 2's melee system that might seem daunting at first, but are extremely rewarding when successfully used against enemy players.

Purchasing a prime account (a permanent upgrade for $10) offers the following advantages: Access to the stats and achievements systems (track progress and reach milestones), access to the replays system (view replays of all matches played on official servers), the ability to create and manage clans, 2 extra inventory slots (6 instead of 4), and unlimited use of the hellbourne units (rather than just 1 preview use each). The prime account upgrade is optional, and there is by no means a barrage of prompts that impede gameplay (instead, there are notices alongside certain interface elements, but they do not prevent normal operation of the game nor are they pop-ups or nag screens). A prime account is NOT required to compete - instead it's a nice perk and helps us continue to support Savage 2.

Regarding the combination of different genres - Savage 2 is a bit complex and it may be difficult to understand what's going on from time to time, but upon seeing how well the different elements mesh together, it's pretty clear that the combination is a groundbreaking and amazing achievement unlike any other game.

It is clear, however, that we need to provide more information to new and prospective new players to elaborate on the many aspects of Savage 2 - it's one of the projects I'm currently working on.

The most common cause for this is having an unsupported ATI card (anything earlier than a Radeon 9500). Other Directx8.1 and earlier cards will have similar problems. If you're not using an older video card, then you may need to update your video card drivers or Directx.
