Welcome to the 8th Annual Mod of the Year Awards - the premiere event that celebrates the best creations within the modding and indie gaming scene. Developers have delivered plenty of great gameplay experiences this year, and now it is our turn as gamers to nominate and recognize the best of 2009.

From now until Feb 20th, we shall be sharing a year in review and showcasing the editors' picks of 2009, culminating in the announcement of this year's best mod and game as voted by you. The top mods and games will win the honors of being placed alongside other projects that have gone on to become commercial successes and cement their place in ModDB's hall of fame. And to the winner goes the spoils; ModDB has teamed up with a whole lineup of sponsors that have provided prizes ranging from software to servers to beanbags. Everything to help budding developers excel at their craft.

After 80,000 votes for 3,500 mods and indie games, the top 100 AS PICKED by you are here!

Posted by INtense! on Jan 6th, 2010

Whether you raided Cursed Egyptian tombs, fought MechWarrior's, got lost in the Nameless Mod's dialog, found yourself on the streets of NeoTokyo, did some Research and Development or were mysteriously followed by a giant ball. It is hard to deny that 2009 was a brilliant year for the developers of mods and indie games, and you the players. This year 54 newcomers made it into the top 100, while 46 titles returned from previous years (which were updated in 2009, but haven't won previously) including the evergreen and everpopular ESF and Sven Coop. Honorable mentions go out to Black Mesa, Project Reality and Mount & Blade each of whom made it but cannot re-win. Without further delay, I present to you:

The Top 100 Players Choice

You have 15 days to vote for your favorites, before
we crown the 2009 Mod and Indie Game of the Year

I'm surprised that only 3 indie games made it, that's crazy! I'm quite excited though that Platinum Arts Sandbox was one of them. Thanks so much for everyone's support and heck maybe some year Sandbox can even beat out Last Man Standing Coop :D WOO HOO. Take care and best of luck to everyone who made it into the top 100!!!!!

Indie games are handicapped because they cannot surf on the popularity of their parent game. When someone wants a shooter, they look for HL2 mods, not for indie games.

Between this and the crazy amount of work needed to make a decent indie game, one has to wonder who even wants to do it.

That's also why it is kind of sad that so many unreleased indies are in there, while the ones who worked hard and released aren't in there. Such is the way of things though I guess. Take care.

This is the Warcraft 3 mapper's problem. Too many mods, not enough players (and too many commercial games to compete against, too).

What's left is advertising.

I think it's unfair there is only a few indie but hundreds of mods. It doesn't give indies a chance to get in. Good list anyway a lot of the same mods again though :S but some nice new titles. Make more indies next year i want to get into it with my indie title Bounce! :D.

Perhaps a whole "sister site" is in order for featuring Indie Games? If at all possible. It could be a great idea if you can manage it. I know this community would love and appreciate it!

I might add that they have 1/3rd of the top 100 in both released and unreleased. (32 mods)

I really don't think that is right :/ more or less makes it seem biased.

there are 6174 mods on moddb, 1457 of them are based on half-life 2,
which are 23,5% of all mods.

now 32 of 200 titles are half-life 2 based in the top 100, which is 16%.

thus i think that's alright!

MaceMadunusus Jan 6 2010, 12:29pm replied:

Theres 100 overall, go count. Its 32% of the top 100. 50 per released and unreleased.

To be honest, I really do not believe some of the HL2 mods up there deserve it compared to some other mods that got ousted because they do not have the luxury of such a ginormous community from source. I saw that those mods had gone out and advertised on quite a few websites to get votes. Yet they still could not oust the power house of source.

I can see source getting quite a lot of mods, but this is just a bit ridiculous. Give some other mods from other games a chance.

I would also like to add that quite a lot of those 6,000 mods are mods prone to failing, more or less wanna be modders. Though, maybe thats just for some of the games I pay attention to, not sure about all.

yeah, hl2 spam once more.. srry to say but they really should put a limit to the amount of mods of a certain game can come in, i mean there are a lot more games that are a lot harder to mod. just like kotor, jka, roman total war etc. so.........

We have experimented with the format over the past few years and it is difficult to do without unfairly penalizing mods. Look out for the editors choice in 30 days. Our aim is to pick the deserving, brilliant mods which are sometimes missed

The categories do seem less biased this time round, so that's a start.

The 2008 categories franbkly sucked compared to the 2007 ones. The whole point of mods and indie games is that they are made with limited resources and ideally gameplay should take preference over labour-heavy aspects like 'graphics' and 'story'.

If this were my show, I'd go further and assign ALL of the editor's choice categories to various aspects of gameplay and design brilliance. Even the latest postmortem reveals it: graphics at the cost of gameplay ruins lives.

That should indeed help quite a lot. However, I still cant shake the feeling that some deserving mods will not even get close to that.

Here are some mods I thought deserved a potential slot in the top 100 from JKA.
http://www.moddb.com/mods/jkgalaxies
http://www.moddb.com/mods/movie-battles-ii
http://www.moddb.com/mods/star-wars-movie-duels

With this MBII has been featured on some of the monthly mod spotlight videos after being released. The Moddb staff has PM'd the leaders on the site asking for footage of the game simply because they do not have Jedi Academy at all to even play on and record themselves. How are mods like these going to be able to go through if the staff cannot even play? The MBII team has even been discussing buying a copy specifically for the Moddb staff for this purpose, so you can actually try our mod. I'm sure if any of the staff was willing, a few team members would even walk you through the game and how it works.

So I ask you, how do you plan to handle some cases like this?

Well said from Mace - I am especially quite in favour of "Movie Duels 2" Because it has done what so many failed to do, and it has done it humble and open to anyone's input.

I find it sad that, naturally, the voting is based on what games the largest amount of people have! That is of course to be expected, but do you even have any idea how many people own HL2 ? Compared to almost anything! Leaving battlefield, C&C and UT out of it.

If I may use the same examples as Mace did, then I would point at the fact that even though less people are left to play JKA, and therefore both MBII and MDII, that can't possibly mean they shouldn't stand a chance quality-wise. - Each of Mace's examples have accomplished feats that goes beyond a lot of HL2's zombie-filled modding community - granted though that we can't make cutting edge graphics as Project reality :\

I look up to gems like ESF and NNK, mods that in quality are unmatched in their category, most definately, but much of it's strength still found itself on the fact that an incredible amount of people own Half Life.
