Welcome to the 8th Annual Mod of the Year Awards - the premiere event that celebrates the best creations within the modding and indie gaming scene. Developers have delivered plenty of great gameplay experiences this year, and now it is our turn as gamers to nominate and recognize the best of 2009.
From now until Feb 20th, we shall be sharing a year in review and showcasing the editors' picks of 2009, culminating in the announcement of this year's best mod and game as voted by you. The top mods and games will win the honors of being placed alongside other projects that have gone on to become commercial successes and cement their place in ModDB's hall of fame. And to the winner goes the spoils; ModDB has teamed up with a whole lineup of sponsors that have provided prizes ranging from software to servers to beanbags. Everything to help budding developers excel at their craft.

2009 was the year that has had the most new profiles created to date, and my mods updating. To be nominated for an award in Best Upcoming mod projects need to have been updated significantly during 2009 and have not released (obviously) anything more then a demo. Here are the Editors of ModDB's top selection of 2009.

Naruto: Naiteki Kensei
offers a new and unique fast-paced gaming experience based on the hit Japanese anime Naruto. Combining aspects of a third-person shooter and an action-based fighter, players will be able to go head-to-head against others online casting clever and powerful jutsus, performing evasive, acrobatic, and free-form movement and melee, and utilizing an array of weapons with multiple functions.

Cry of Fear
You wake up in a dark alley, not knowing anything. What has happened anyway? You struggle after the truth and answers. Answers you want to know in the darkness and fear, which makes your heartbeat race like violent blows against your head. Where do "they" come from? What has happened? Are you just turning insane?
Airborn
is an action adventure mod in a fantastic world on flying islands eons after the world has collapsed from overexploitation.
Zeitgeist
Zeitgeist puts the player into our world, seventy five years ago - except that it's not the world as we know it. The story as it is now, although it might still be changed - time is in a constant flow. History: it is often defined by minor events, resulting in major changes.
Raindrop
September 1997, somewhere in Russia. 58 years have passed since the complex has been cut off from the outside world. You wake up in an abandoned tunnel, without even a name .
The end is nigh!
Love all the mods. But Cry of Fear is my favorite of them all <3
Still, to all mods, give it your best.
>)
naruto win >.> lol
The Editors are making the same mistake they made when they voted "Dead Before Dawn" as the best upcoming mod... Oh, the nightmare repeats itself... Talented modders who rely on "original" (remember that, wherever you like it or not, nothing is 100% original nowadays) ideas are getting slapped on the face once again.
I believe that every single mod on the list, except for Naruto, had a chance to win. Hopefully us players with our votes can ensure that the original mods which do deserve recognition for their professionalism and amount of work spent on them.
Again, don't get me wrong, Naruto is a well-made mod and maybe slightly fun to play but... Come on... 3D Fighting Game based on an Anime... Yaaaaaaaawn.
It seems to me that RainDrop is highly anticipated.
I'll check it out later.
Naruto... >_>
So many butthurt players here. Why don't you see what wins PLAYER'S choice instead of crying?
You gotta be freakin' ******** me.
WAAAT!?!?
Either CoF, Raindrop or Zeitgeist. BUT NARUTO!?!?!?!?!?!?!??!?
JEZEZ!!
Oh come on, Naruto shouldn't win on the grounds of it being, you know, Naruto.
Heh, love reading these posts. So many ppl hating on NNK because they're biased against the source material. 'course if I had my way with a lot of these awards, no FPS would ever win. Been done to death. Though airborn and zeitgesit both have interesting visuals. What we need more of in the mod scene is ppl trying to make game genres that haven't been thought of yet.
you pronounced seedgeist wrong. xDDD
NNK is released. Why is it here?
man, naruto shouldn't have won its not a unique game... its exactly like the dbz mod for half-life
its not that its a bad game, though the anime has turned to crap, but just by a quick glance into some of the other mods pages, naruto shouldnt have had a chance
You ever played ESF? That's like saying CS and Natural Selection were identical mods because they both had guns.
yes a have, i used to play it alot... great game and this is almost exactly like it besides it being naruto and having a different keyboard set up. The melee system is altered and you have to handsign your jutsu, but everythuing else is pretty much the same
\
I win, you loose.
I'm happy, you're raging about it.
Not caring about random guys raging on the internet sure is great.
Well said.
WHAT THE ****?!
******* NARUTARDS!
A bit sad. In our day, originality reigned supreme. Still, congrats to all those whom the editors chose.
wtf? no FOK mod!?!
Yay, some cry of fear montage, god, what the hell is that?
ha, naruto owns you all.
Naruto wins?
How can it win with Zeitgeist and Raindrop, 2 über-mods, as competition!?
narutards ****** u ,esf is better
