From now until Feb 20th, we shall be sharing a year in review and showcasing the editors' picks of 2009, culminating in the announcement of this year's best mod and game as voted by you. The top mods and games will win the honors of being placed alongside other projects that have gone on to become commercial successes and cement their place in ModDB's hall of fame. And to the winner goes the spoils; ModDB has teamed up with a whole lineup of sponsors that have provided prizes ranging from software to servers to beanbags. Everything to help budding developers excel at their craft.

2009 the year of the singleplayer mod, so many great release and so many mods that should be in this list (if it where longer). To be nominated for an award in Best Singleplayer Mod projects need to have been updated significantly during 2009 and be Singleplayer only. Here are the Editors of ModDB's top selection of 2009.

The Nameless Mod
In Forum City, the Internet is serious business. As its name implies, the city is the physical embodiment of Internet forums and bulletin boards. It's more like The Matrix or Tron than Second Life, however, as the troubles of the city are no laughing matter. Embracing the style of Deus Ex, Forum City has as much crime and conspiracy as the world of JC Denton — but most citizens would have it no other way.

Cube Experimental
is a Mod for Fallout 3. Just started as a small test project to find out the possibilities of the Fallout-3-Engine and growth larger now. This project places a hidden entrance, of an forgotten cube complex, to the wasteland of Washington D.C.
Out of Hell
A singleplayer horror experience for UT2004! Make your way through a decimated town overrun by blood-thirsty zombies! Powerful firearms and brutal melee weapons are at your disposal as you cut and cleave through over 20 grimy and blood-soaked maps!
The Ball
As an archaeologist working on the slopes of a dormant volcano somewhere in Mexico, you get stuck in an underground Cavern. It doesn't take long before you realize this is more than just a cave. You reveal ancient ruins that have been hidden from outsiders for centuries and discover a mysterious artifact, a gold and metal shelled Ball.
Curse: Hell Awaits
is a Half-Life 2 single player total conversion : a mix of physics based combat, puzzles and exploration. In the first episode you can explore an egyptian necropolis and kill mummies, monsters with a morning star.
I have buy ut2k4 only for out of hell {ooh}, and i am happy, i have take a good choice.
They're all great but the nameless mod was a diserving winner.
It's true, rats do make great cat toys. :D
Great choice of the winning video sequence. Beeblequix rules :D . Contrats to all nomenees. Seeing that TNM had been nominated I had been quite certain who is going to win. The other projects are though great as well. There should be allowed multiple winners as all of the top projects win in their own category.
It just HAD to be TNM. Let's be serious, if it wouldn't have won, it'd have been a scandal. I didn't play it, but I already enjoyed reading their articles and watching the videos. Just epic in all terms.
I prefer BBq Rat Tail myself, but its purely my opinion.
As for the Mods, I havn't tried any of them so I can only make judgements buy the info I could find and what I see. TNM has an astounding 30 hours of gameplay - which is quite a feat and if it really is better then the original game then I will need to try it.
As for the ball, go figure its been nominated in nearly every category it qualifies for. Its created by one of the most well known mod and professional developers around (its hardly fair imo)but a lot of teams have professinal devs on them so who cares I guess.
Congrats to TNM!
Mods like CURSE and The Ball may have a very well polished unique look but Research and Development is just extremely fun, from beginning to end. Its unfortunate it wasn't at least nominated.
Guess I'll just have to buy Deus Ex then :D
Congratulations for all the nominees :)
Out of Hell all the way!
THE NAMELESS MOD :D
LOVE THIS DAMN MOD WELL DONE GUYS :D
The Other Nominees Do Look Interesting Though So I might give them ago too:)
Man I love the rat dialog in TNM! too good!
w00t for TNM!!
Well done and congrats TNM team! I shouldn't have watched that video, now I can't get my mind off those rat strips... ;)
(buried)
pathetic list
Lol rat boiled in its own urine :D 10/10
again the community has proven that it's capable of surpassing professional game developers at times, even if it takes years of development ...and without charging any money for the final product :) *waves to 2K and 3D Realms* would be cool if such a mod was made for Deus Ex 2, too.
Sadly Deus Ex 2 has no SDK.
Strange way to pronounce Deus Ex there, sounds much like "Daewoo Sex", but grats guys!
Awesone The Nameless Mod!!! I love Deus Ex!!!
Congratulations! :-D
Looking back at all of my PerfectDark MISSION'S, now knowing that the one's I wanted to Show, I can't and are the Future, and are still CLASSIFIED.
