Welcome to the 7th Annual Mod of the Year Awards - the premiere event that celebrates the best creations within the modding and indie gaming scene. Developers have poured their blood, sweat and tears into creating new gameplay experiences that truly "change the game". Now its time for the gamers to voice
their opinions and select their top picks of the year.

**Presenting the 2008 Winners**

From now until Feb 28th, the MOTY will present to you the cream of the crop for 2008 as voted by the public. The top mods and games will win the honors of being placed alongside other projects that have gone on to become commercial successes and cement their place in ModDB's hall of fame. And to the winner goes the spoils; ModDB has teamed up with a whole lineup of sponsors that have provided prizes ranging from software to servers to commercial engines. Everything to help budding developers excel at their craft.

Your vote has been cast and the winners have been locked in. Soon it will be that time of year when we present the best mods and indie games of 2008 with the help of the US Air Force.

Posted by INtense! on Feb 6th, 2009

Running the Mod of the Year is always an incredible experience for us at ModDB. The stakes are high, the prizes and support of the competition is stronger than ever (with our announcement of the US Air Force's involvement today). The development scene is healthier than it has ever been, with so many deserving mod and indie games battling it out to become recognized as the best of 2008. After all, past winners, runners up and top 100 titles have gone on to become so much more, when a hobby becomes a job and a well regarded commerical success story.

Little over 24 hours ago top 100 voting closed in the 7th Annual Mod of the Year awards. You have spoken with your votes and the winners are locked in. In a few weeks time we will begin the "winners showcase" phase which runs for the remainder of this month. Each day an editors choice pick (across a number of categories) will be announced OSCARS style (i.e. nominee's then the winner). Expect an assortment of great titles to be coming your way. Then as the curtain closes the culmination of the competition occurs on the last day of Febuary as we announce the 2008 Mod of the Year.

Finally I would like to welcome the US Air Force as the major sponsor of this years winners showcase. With their support we know we can continue to grow this competition and help you continue to be recognised as the great developers and innovators you are.

It’s amazing how modders can take a game everyone knows and loves, add a little inspiration, imagination and hard work and create something completely new — a mod that is downloaded by thousands and worthy of great praise. It’s this ingenuity that makes us proud to be associated with the 2009 Mod of the Year Awards. After all, the men and women of the United States Air Force exhibit the same modder-like qualities every day. Whether it’s breaking the sound barrier for the first time, inventing GPS or developing software to fend off cyber attacks, we know what it’s like to have ideas that demand to be born. So congratulations to this year’s winner and all the participants. May your next mod be downloaded by millions.

the average age for a gamer/modder is 20something and im pretty sure thats just what age they want new recruits. but it wont be that effective, seeing as how this is an international site, and not many people here agree with what the US army is doing to the world, hence your comment.

**** every branch of the military. You should only join to serve your country not because they have similar interest (which they don't). They are a workhorse and when you're told to do something you work your *** off 'till it's done. It's volunteer work and a sacrifice not a cool place to be. You become government property which sounds cool until you realize you're a slave and sometimes they like to experiment on you... Boot camp is the same **** that they put troubled youth through. They even ******* tell you to turn off your brain in boot camp. That's what they told me after threatening to beat me up and **** and get me thrown in the brig for wanting out near graduation. I am so ******* glad I got out of that **** hole. They even make fun of the civilians which are the people you're supposed to be defending. Their gay little lie for each other ****** brotherhood **** is more important to them. **** the air force and especially the Navy who used to advertise here last year. They also turn you into a bunch of lying snitches in bootcamp. I wouldn't trust some of the people who enlist with my dog let alone my life. One *** tried to force me to use my tooth brush in a urinal after I used it. The *** had no ranking above me even he was just a big power hungry piece of ****. FUUUUUUCK THE MILITARYYYYYYY AND THE ELITES THAT CONTRL THEM. :O

Oh and I'd like to add that even the guys who worked at the training academy hated the Navy. The guys at the shooting range would rant about how we gunner's mates were replacements for american body bags in the middle east. Lots of other military men and women there love to get their hate for the military off of their chest. I feel sorry for anyone who thinks that our military is an honorable choice right now. Only losers join it and defend what they are doing right now just to give their **** lives some purpose. ******* morons...

I hope your radiated *** doesn't have cancer because I know a 4 year servant is a grunt. I bet you wish you stayed in after all those dead braincells. I hope you do ok in the civilized world. The Air Force and Navy have always been huge supporters of the MOTY. The amount of tech it takes to run the planes, satelites, spy gear etc is astounding and well they see you guys as the best. After all game development is incredibly difficult - don't think anyone can argue with me there.

We are happy to have them on board and hope they continue to support the awards in '09 and beyond.

This doesn't have anything to do with that, you are obviously some anti-american freak to see the airforce as a sponsor for a video game modding list and try to complain about how you think America is the worst thing ever to the extent of what your going for.

Gryx Feb 7 2009, 7:20am replied:

From what I've read, video games are not used in the military as form of "training" per se. Rather they're an extra aid that can be used to assist the development of teamwork and coordination between squad members.

Still, it's nice to see them helping out the modding community :)

+3 votes     reply to comment
Dragonlord Feb 7 2009, 1:14pm replied:

Fact is ( and the military said it themselves ) is that they use video games to lower the killing threshold. The KT simply indicates how much it takes before you pull the trigger on somebody. Common civilians have a rather high threshold ( so it takes a lot or is nearly impossible to get them to use a gun ).
