Event Coverage

Everyday, ModDB's front page fills with news of recent development updates for projects on every platfrom. Many mods have recognized ModDB as the #1 contributor to the well-being of the community around their mod. The gathering of both gamers and developers that make up our audience and the easy accessibility to them have been the main tenets behind ModDB's success.

The players' choice awards were designed to gauge which mods and indie games hold the most clout among ModDB's community. 2008 saw a large number of quality projects come to fruition, with yet many more to see an eventual release in 2009. The mods listed here are the top five choices ModDB members are anticipating. We've already seen one release since the close of voting (Mideast Crisis 2) and there's a very good chance we'll see the rest release sometime this year.

Honorable Mentions

We would like recognize the mods Black Mesa (Half-Life 2) and Mechwarrior Living Legends (Crysis) who both polled extremely strongly and would have made the top 5. However, because each has already made this list in past years, they are ineligible from making the top 5 again in this category.

C&C Tiberium Wars

Mideast_Crisis_2 wrote:"Mideast Crisis 2"(MeC2) is a total conversion for "Command and Conquer 3: Tiberian Wars" by Isotx as the sequel to its "Command and Conquer: Generals - Zero Hour" conversion "Mideast Crisis". Isotx teamed up with Derelict Studios, in which the staff for MeC2 is largely composed out of core team members from past SAGE engine mods such as; Blitzkrieg 2, Halogen (now known as Asylum), Mideast Crisis and Rise of Rome. Features include 3 distinct factions; Israel Defense Forces, the Guardians of Islam and the UN Peacekeepers which you can play in both multiplayer and singleplayer spanning maps (and missions) from Beirut to Jerusalem. MeC2's gameplay focuses on occupation warfare within cities using 3 types of resources; money (from occupation taxes), fuel (from oil derricks and gas stations) and special ammunition (from ammo crates). We're also bringing back secondary resources in the form of; embedded reporters, settlements and hacking.

3.Renegade X
Unreal Tournament 3

Renegade_X wrote:Renegade X (formerly known as Renegade 2007) is a mod dedicated to recreating C&C Renegade in the new generation engine, the Unreal Engine 3. We all believe the Command and Conquer series is a very special one, and its fans have been following its games for over a decade now. C&C has been one of the most successful videogame series in the RTS Genre. Our modding team believes that C&C Renegade is truly a hidden gem in the FPS genre.
C&C Renegade's specialty was its multiplayer mode, because it was not mindless killing like most games. A player was thrown into a battle as soon as he joined a server, in which teamplay was the only way to win. The game revolves around a war between the Global Defense Initiative, and the Brotherhood of Nod. Each faction would have their own base of operations consisting of buildings. A team had to work together to destroy the enemy base, while keeping theirs intact. By simply switching engines, our team will have fixed many of C&C Renegade's faults. The original game had many problems such as bad netcoding, poor graphics, glitches, etc. Our main goal is to bring this great gameplay to the masses, all the graphical enhancements is merely just icing on the cake.

2.Neotokyo
Half-Life 2

Neotokyo wrote:Neotokyo takes place in and around a fictionalized Tokyo approximately 30 years in the future. Mankind has begun to fuse with technology. Government and corporate corruption have transformed Tokyo into a deadly dystopian nightmare. After a near-successful military coup by ranking members of Jinrai, the National Security Force (NSF) is formed - answering directly to the Prime Minister, it's mission is to investigate and eliminate all threats to Japan, both abroad and at home. The initial core of the NSF is made from an exodus from within the intelligence branch of the military. With this betrayal begins the war in the shadows between the NSF and Jinrai. Neotokyo is a first person shooter that aims to provide a visceral & realistic combat experience in a rich futuristic setting.

ModDB, tell me, what is a MAPPER going to do with a whole GAME ENGINE? It´s a shame to waste that great price to someone that can´t even use it! (If he could, he would make DBD a mod.)

I completely agree, if it wasn't for Dead before dawn, then renegade-x team would be getting a torque engine license, and I can assure you that we would be doing something with it! I can't possibly imagine what some mappers are going to do with a game engine! What are mappers going to do with books on 3d design and animation? It seems that many of these prizes are going to waste when most real mods would greatly benifit from them.

I've lost much of my respect for the moty awards and moddb in general. Shouldn't Dead before dawn be listed as an addon anyway? Like every other freaking map pack.

I totally agree with you. The awards are for mod developers, to help them PRODUCE modifications, nay, with the prizes, full commercial games! The entire purpose for the awards in the first place, based on the awards. So now, a couple of mappers are laughing, with all the prizes and have no idea what to do with them.

A complete waste of time to even promote a mod for the awards (really, promoting ModDB so they can draw in more sponsorship and revenue) if all of the promotion and hard work of dedicated modification developers are going to be rewarded with giggling, click happy L4D fans voting for the first L4D map pack. All I can say is, it is a travesty.

I would like to say sorry to all honest and hard working, real mod creation teams, as I help promote this farce as well.

I'm going to have to agree with this. The Torque license may go to waste with the Dead Before Dawn mod, considering it's a map pack that does not quite modify the game. What are mappers going to be doing with the engine as opposed to actual mod teams, like the other 4 finalists? Dead Before Dawn should just get an honorable mention, like Black Mesa did.

Wasted prizes completely, mods like Renegade-X and Neotokyo would make far better use of such engines.

That and I completely agree with every single one of the comments above DBD being a map pack.

My respect and support for MOTY just flew out the window, I'm afraid. Its not easy saying that when I'm such a long-time avid user and supporter of this site.

I hope the editors heed this year's comments and make sure next year sees the approporiate changes.

It’s all about the mods with the best trailer videos, as its better to showcase that, then a mod that works behind the doors and works on more important things (like getting the project finished)

What looks better for moddb?, A mod that makes pretty trailers, or a solid mod that doesn’t focus on trailers but does the work.

you can't make a pretty trailer for a crappy looking mod though.
Also Dead before Dawn doesn't seem to have a "pretty trailer" yet it won, sooo???

Also don't forget people flock to games that have pretty trailers too, most games have even prettier trailers then mods can be quite deceiving. Especially compared to mod trailers that are usually recorded from ingame footage rather then created with 3d animation tools.
(I believe Age of Chivalry was one of the few exceptions, a long time back it had this really cool trailer that wasn't made ingame)

what's up with some people saying us "fanboys" are whining that our favorite mods didn't win? whoever is saying that should be ashamed of himself and should check out those people's profile's, those guys are no "fanboys" they're the developers and modders that put hard work in their creations.

I haven't been a modder that long compared to some titans like NeoTokyo, but I can sure say that making a REAL mod with more then mapping and scripting, takes ALOT more time.

In fact an experienced mapper I have on my team, created 4 great maps in not much more then a month, but the actual mod has been in development for over 6 months.

People like you who don't know what you're talking about, should learn your places, ModDB is a place for modders, and it's the majority of those modders speaking here, along with some mod lovers, who care for more then just zombie games.

Maybe in the future DBD will make use of everything the SDK has to offer and become as much a Mod as it can bloody be, but right now it's really not much more but a map pack, a good one yes, maybe will be very different from L4D someday, but that should make it Best mod of 2009... NOT 2008 where it's still a map pack.

Ofcourse the L4D SDK isn't out yet, and you can't blame the guy who made it that it can't be a mod YET. But that doesn't mean it should be voted as mod of the year when it isn't a mod just yet.

Anyway can't blame DBD, can't really blame ModDB either, but it IS wrong and shouldn't have happened.

If you can't understand why people are mad over this then maybe you should try actually modding something that's more then a map for over half a year at the least.
Then you will realize there have been years put into other mods and only months in DBD, THEN you will understand why some of us are so ****** off by this.

it's a map pack because the SDK isn't out, from video's I only see LEFT4DEAD gameplay. The only thing that represents the movie is the locations, not gameplay and characters, therefore it's just maps to be played in Left 4 Dead.

And like I said, maybe it will be more then a map pack, but that would be in 2009, and these are the 2008 awards.
