Welcome to Mod DB and the 6th Annual Mod of the Year Awards - the definative event that showcases the best mods and indie games in the world and recognizes the teams behind them. The MOTY is a tribute to the creativity, dedication & hard work independent developers put into creating unique gaming experiences that enable us to "play something different".
Over the coming months we will showcase to you the best mods and games in the industry. You vote for those you believe are worthy of recognition. At the top of this program sits the ultimate prize, the mod of the year award won previously by Natural Selection, Red Orchestra, PoE2 and Garry's Mod. Thanks to our sponsors, this year we have a few surprizes up our sleaves not to mention a slew of prizes for the participating teams.
From Dec 1st to Jan 1st, industry professionals, developers, gamers and the general public cast their votes to decide which mods define the cutting edge of interactive entertainment and which mod teams attain gaming celebrity.

It is strangely addictive watching this scoreboard tick over...
Hey, it's a nice new counter for the awards, but how about getting the important things sorted out first like the video servers so people that haven't submitted any video's before the switch over can showcase their mods, as without this, these awards are starting to look unfair & a bit of a farce.
I suspected this would come up and you will be pleased to know videos are what I am working on right this minute. Now that the majority of MOTY content is running videos should follow in the next 48hours (given no issues pop-up).
I remember thinking at the time of the switchover that you would have your work cut out for you as the switchover was almost on top of the MONTY's, seems I thought right, & if the video servers can't be fixed up before the awards are finished, or even if they are fixed half way through, then how fair is that, as even up to now I & other modders have probably lost out on votes that might have gone our way if our video's were showcasing.
Don't get me wrong, I don't think that my mode will come anywhere in the awards, being a Max Payne 1 mod, so weither I stand a chace of winning or not is irrelevant, but there are mod's out there with unshown video's that do stand a chance, so I'd like to think that the awards are still fair to all concerned.
Can't believe no ones voting for either Insurgency or Black Mesa, COME ON
Tick, tick, tick BOOM... :D
Nice work on the scoreboard mate :D
come on lets go Mafia multiplayer mod!!
I watched it about 5 times now. It's an awesome feature. ^_^
So...beautiful...
Nice job. This will be quite interesting to observe.
SCOREBOAED !
Well it confirms my suspicions, anyway. :P
ahh now i can watch my mod not appear lol! nah this is a cool thing congrats
Can you see wich mod is leading? :/
Click on the scoreboard above to see the real scoreboad in action.
Yay, i can watch Half-Life 2 stay at the top all, w00t :p
It's amazing to see that even after all this time that Half-Life 1 is still up there in the leading mod games, or is this something to do with the excellent, recently released PARANOIA mod?
Why the hell is Crysis number 4? It doesn't even *have* any serious mods released for it yet.
But it has graphix therefore MUST BE CLICKED ON
lol!
I'm completely miffed. There isn't much in the Crysis section even worth voting for! A one or two nice 'just started' mods (e.g MechWarrior: Living Legends), but largely a lot of nothing;
From the 52 Crysis entries, six (six!!?) are 'Jurassic Park' mods. Four are zombie mods. Three are Command and Conquer mods. Sixteen are historical / realism mods, all of which are World War 2, Vietnam or 'Modern Warfare'. Two are Stargate. There's also 40k, Halo, Goldeneye, and a few other 'let's make it on yet another engine' mods...
I've repeatedly suggested a category that gives props for originality that would help mitigate this sort of nearly-industry type ridiculousness...
It'd be nice to also know how the Indie games are doing for IGOTY because the Top 10 Games that have been modded is really useless info for me IMO, though others might find it useful. Don't forget that there is more than Mods in the categories this time.
You can see indie games being voted on in the third column too. There's just a lot more mods so you don't see them pass by often.
I deliberately don't show mods / or leading indie games so that way no cheating etc goes on. All that is simply displayed is votes as they happen, since you cannot really determine a great deal from a vote.
I think your cheating yourself here mate if you think that this scoreboard shows the true score of what might have been for some modders if your video servers were up & working already.
In my opinion this scoreboard should never have been put up before the video servers were up & working, & the awards should never have been started before then also, as they are bias in favor of modders that do have their videos already on show.
Even if you manage to fix the video servers up in the next couple of days, there's just no going back now as voting has already begun, & it's too late for some as a lot of modders have already cast their votes, & I do know that modders are allowed to vote for more then one mod, but it's also a know fact that many don't.
That's why this years awards will always be tainted with the stigmer of unfair voting for me.
What a shame........:(
Oh my god, will you shut up already? "VIDEOS VIDEOS VIDEOS BAAAAWW"
Every post, "THIS IS UNFAIR BECUZ THERES NO VIDEOS" It's called promoting your mod based on what it actually has instead of faking thing in After-Effects.
Yea,
Thanks for your rude & unconstructive comment, your obviously someone that dosn't believe in fair play, & as I said above this is not about me & my mod, as my mod's for Max Payne 1, & there's very little interest in playing it anymore let alone mods for it. So i'm under no illusion that my mod will win anythig.
No, my comments are about fair play for all, & I've had members contact me in agreement on this subject, & your the only person so far to disagree with it, & yes all mods & games video's are fake to certain degree as this is called avertising & every one does it including big games companies, so unless your saying that this practise should not continue, I find this comment very strange & irrelevant.
It's not biased against anyone. If they have videos to show, then they have more to show. If they have more to show, they have more reason to win. That's like saying mods with screenshots shouldn't be able to have an advantage over those that don't.
Your missing the point mate, which is that people have been uploading there video's for this years awards as they have got more to show, as you put it, but because the video servers are down no one's able to view them, so anyone that's already got videos that they uploaded up before the site switch over, or foe the awards last year has got an unfair advantage, as these video's are working.
It's not like YouTube and GoogleVideo do not exist.
Exactly. The new video feature will be handy, but most users will either vote because of sympathy or general interest. Or they really take a closer look at the mod. And such a closer look does not only consist of a video.
I agree, videos will be helpful to get a certain overview of the respective mod. But other MOTYs have worked without as well. I do not think that this will have that much of an impact on the outcome. And also keep in mind that we're still in nomination phase.
As far as I remember, the finalists last year would have their videos up on demand - so when it becomes critical, I think you can be sure that there will be videos available.
Nice to see a contructive comment without the rudeness.
Or just upload the video as a download, it's not a hard concept to figure out. The voting bias has absolutely nothing to do with videos.
As evidenced by the aformentioned Crysis being in the top 5...
Mmhmm.
It's nice to see C&C3 moving up the ranks though. :V
how do i vote? where? :P
woah it's mermerising I think it's hypnotizing me :S
It's strange that realy old mod's that have either been released for years, or discontinue years ago because the modders working on them have lost their interest, are still able to be voted for in these awards, & you'd be amazed at the amount of votes that some of these mods are still getting, & a lot of modders only cast one vote, so it's a vote waisted in my opinion.
Surely this needs to be looked into, as after all this is the Mod Of The Year Awards, & not the Mod Of The Decade.
It would be a lot better if awards were confined to mods that had been released in the past year, or mods that are still active.
After all you wouldn't give a 2007 OSCAR to a movie that was made in previous years would you?
Just a thought......;)
You have a point.
According to the countdown on the scoreboard there are two days left, 7 hours. What the heck? :o
