Mod of the Year 2007

Welcome to Mod DB and the 6th Annual Mod of the Year Awards - the definative event that showcases the best mods and indie games in the world and recognizes the teams behind them. The MOTY is a tribute to the creativity, dedication & hard work independent developers put into creating unique gaming experiences that enable us to "play something different".

Over the coming months we will showcase to you the best mods and games in the industry. You vote for those you believe are worthy of recognition. At the top of this program sits the ultimate prize, the mod of the year award won previously by Natural Selection, Red Orchestra, PoE2 and Garry's Mod. Thanks to our sponsors, this year we have a few surprizes up our sleaves not to mention a slew of prizes for the participating teams.

From Dec 1st to Jan 1st, industry professionals, developers, gamers and the general public cast their votes to decide which mods define the cutting edge of interactive entertainment and which mod teams attain gaming celebrity.

Follow the links to join us on an unforgettable journey as we present the 2007 Mod of the Year.

It has been a big year of modding and a big year for the Mod DB, but nothing is bigger than our Mod of the Year (MOTY) awards which we look forward to launching in a weeks time. It is time to recognize and showcase the best of the best from the indie game development scene. This year we will be doing things just like we have in past years... but before we kick off the event in true Mod DB style we would like to hear from you, our community (and the players choice voters) how you would like this years event to be run.

What should the winning categories be? Who should win prizes, how should you vote? Put forward any ideas you have because we want this years event to be better than it ever has been. Mod DB team out.

2007 introduces a new rule. You cannot win in the same category twice which means BMS cannot win Unreleased MOTY. They could win in other categories (for example if they released there mod, they would then be eligible for the Mod of the Year category).

Released mods after last years is key for me. Last year should be last year. Like the GDC awards show they just dont have the same game up each year if they win or loose they look for new games and devs.

The Black Mesa is a great mod but the comments of hope they win again is sort of old.

I think those awards need a bit more polish...

How about a "fast track" or "teamwork" mod (editor's choice) award for a mod with quality content that was developed in a short period of time?

Hope you guys put together a nice video dealie for the finalist entries and announced winners, would go a long ways into building up the anticipation and prestige of the event. Also, why not contact the winners and have short interviews with the winning teams (future plans and what not). Video would be nice but audio is a more realistic goal.

I would like to see an award category for lone modders on this site like myself who are doing all the work for themselves as this is a much harder process to complete. But all this site ever seems to recognise is groups or teams with no thought for the lone modders out there, hell i'm also always be recognised as a group or a team by this site & over members & it clearly stated in my profile that I am working alone, & i'm always hereing people banging on about how modding is a team game, which it is not always.

So come on lets here it for us lone modders.

ALSO: I hope this year that the modders that managed to reach to the TOP 100 stage, will be told after the awards have finished just how far up the TOP 100 chart they came, as last year you would'nt give out this infomation, & I think this is totally unfair to the modders that have worked so hard to achieve even getting that far, & it would get them a much needed boost for something that's, lets face it, not that easy to achieve at the best of times.

Yes but the only way to know if smething is good is to play it. How could you know if something is good enough to be awarded if you havent played it.

And another thing is, if a realesed mod have an Award, is because people have played it and it is good.

Yea, for unreleased mods, anything they say will be in it is all B.S. because I can start a mod and say it will be so great and say it will have a lot of cool features (and list and describe the features), win the best unreleaed mod, and then not put any of those features in it.

The only way to accurately tell whether a mod is good or not is to play it. Just like games....some games look better in the trailers for the games, some look a lot worse in the trailer.

Simply put: Believe what someone has already done, not what they say they are going to do.

well i think an award for small mod teams would be great, working on a mod which is now just 3 guys, even though we have a big mod appearance it would be nice to see the little guys get a shot... other than i'd say keep things simple

Me too. I would also like to see a category that gives props to mods that don't stoop to ripping-off other ppl's intellectual property. That means no Half-life subplot derivatives, no Star Wars/Trek mods, no Dragonball Z mods, no nothing but mods involving original ideas.

Let's pay some respect to the mods that don't rely on a team of highly paid professionals to do their design work for them, mods that don't rely on a world-wide ready-made fanbase. Give props to the mods who earn their watched list!

Yes, but again you can't start giving out individual awards based on different team sizes, like I said, a team is still a team weither it has 2 or 3 members. Where as a 1 man modding can in no way be considered a team by definision.

I think that the "Alone modders" shouldn't have an award they should have articles or news or something to call attention on them to allow others to join their projects. I now that you are doing a good mod,I'm a zombie fan too and I'm waiting to play your mod. But it is not a guarantee about your mod will have the quality to be awarded.

By this comment you presume that all lone modders are working alone because they can not get anyone to join them in creating their mod. This is a common misconception about lone modders as it is most often not the case as I myself have had many offers from other modders to join me in creating my mod, but I have declined all of these kind offers as I choose to work alone as I do not want anyone elses vision of what aspects of what my mod should look like encroaching my own vision.

As for your second comment, QUOTE: But it is not a guarantee about your mod will have the quality to be awarded UNQUOTE, well this comment is not relivant as the same thing could be said about any unreleased mod, weither it be by a lone modder like myself, or by a team.
