When Oculus founder Palmer Luckey took the stage at the Vision Summit 2016, he announced that everyone who purchases a Rift will receive four free months of Unity Pro. Along with the added SteamVR support, such a move is aimed at cementing Unity as the go-to engine for the creation of VR content with ease, as it now has native support for almost every VR platform.
Unity Pro contains advanced graphical, animation and rendering features that would be beneficial for anyone looking to create VR content using the engine.
"For virtual reality, we knew a lot of the best ideas and applications weren't going to come from people that you could predict," said Luckey. "It was going to come from people who would create things you wouldn't expect."
Luckey also hinted that Rift pre-order numbers have exceeded expectations, comparing the demand to the couple of hundred thousand developer kits that were shipped between the Rift DK1 and DK2 numbers combined: "A few hundred thousand dev kits is nothing compared to what we will be doing this year…" he said in an on-stage conversation with Unity CEO John Riccitiello.
