The first version of the engine was known as W3D ("Westwood 3D") was highly modified version of SurRender 3D engine, developed by Hybrid Graphics Ltd. Westwood used W3D for Emperor: Battle for Dune and updated for Command & Conquer: Renegade.

After Westwood was bought by Electronic Arts the engine was further updated for Command & Conquer: Generals, and renamed to SAGE. The rendering part remains nearly identical to the W3D engine, but most other elements have been redesigned from the ground up.

The SAGE engine allows for dynamic lighting that casts realistic shadows and realistic reflections on most objects. High quality visual effects are now possible with the SAGE engine powering games. One example of a unique effect is the stop-motion camera. Blow up a gas station, for example, and the action will freeze in mid-explosion, and the camera will quickly pan around the environment, revealing pieces of debris and shrapnel suspended in the air, before the action promptly resumes. The SAGE engine also allows games to take place during different times of the day, with realistic lighting and shadow changes, etc.

A new, highly modified version is now used to power Command and Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars.

About Red Alert: A Path Beyond with 8 comments by Chronojam on Aug 14th, 2014

RA:APB v. 2.1.3.1

Now Available via BHP Launcher!

While our Version 3.0 build slowly moves towards a stable state suitable for release, we're happy to announce the release of a new balance update right here, right now. Several player concerns and fan feedback will be addressed in this new release, which was put together by community member and moderator Pyryle along with the help of our dedicated internal test team.

You can download Red Alert: A Path Beyond v. 2.1.3.1 using the BHP Launcher application, which also provides automated updates and will allow you to patch your game client if you already have a previous version installed, in addition to providing a convenient server browser. It will also make it easy to download Tiberian Sun: Reborn, another project we work on (TSR v. 1.1.3.1 dropped last month).

Full version information is available at our website, but notable changes include:

  • Full removal of Tech Level mechanic
  • Allied/Soviet Captains are more powerful
  • Ore Trucks are faster (but weaker)
  • Light Tanks no longer climb hills as well
  • Hinds have been nerfed
  • Flamethrower kamikaze attack nerfed
  • Map purchase option adjustments

Please give it a try and send us your feedback.

Our main website has also been updated thanks to work by Catalyst and One Winged Angel, with an improved server status overview, and convenient links to our sites and services such as our Teamspeak 3 server, Facebook and Twitter accounts, plus an integrated IRC chat app that will allow you to hop on easily without the need to get a dedicated client. Stop by and say hello!

Please note that over the next week, some services may experience some downtime as we migrate to new hardware and continue the upgrade process.

Pah. Electronic Arts sucks big. But i must admit i liked C&C3 but the storyline is f**ked up. Heaps of gaps in there.

Only a game... it's only a game. Should issue a book with the complete storyline, fill up the gaps somehow.
