Gold Source (also known as Gold Src) is a heavily-modified version of the original Quake 1 engine, that powered some of the most critically acclaimed games of it's day:
A powerful and versatile engine for it's time, it helped propel modding forward quite a bit with its mod development tools. And even though it's already 10+ years old, it's mod projects are still going strong.

That's right folks! It is true, it's released! This release won't require Half-Life to be installed. It's completely stand alone as a full game, and it's completely free!
Cry of Fear is now known as Cry of Fear 1.6. This is what's new since the last version which was a mod:
Big changes
- Does not require Half-Life
- Downloadable in Steam
- Dramatically improved AI - they follow you everywhere!
- New Blur Effect
- New high quality sound system for weapon sounds + new weapon sounds

Hey, Valve, some guys are using the Quake Engine to make a version of the Source Engine that runs on PSP.
Using the engine, they made a game called Gateway, a portable version of Portal. Moddb.com
Also, some guy made a mod for the first Half-Life so that it would run on older computers. Moddb.com
Gateway is cancelled, and was lacking textures.
