GEM 2 is the latest middleware from the Ukrainian game developers Best Way. Their engine is already well known in Eastern Europe and multiple titles were developed with it. The engine can be licensed through us for the West, aswell as support for the included tools in English and German. Improvements to the engine are being implemented on an on going basis.

As a leading middleware solution for RTS games, GEM 2 includes a huge amount of valuable features such as:

Core features:

  • High density physics, each object such as buildings can be destroyed completely with an enormous level of detail, holes can be shot in the ground and flying parts can hit actors
  • Most realistic armor penetration simulation system, each projectile can end up in a recochet and fly around corners if it hits its target on a very flat angle. Vehicles have no healthbars, they are simulated with different types of armors and their angles. Armor penetration is calculated in accordance to the impact angle, the angle of the armor, the armor strength and the gun strength, adding and enormous tactical addition
  • Direct control feature which allows the player to play each soldier himself and to drive vehicles on his own making your game an outstanding experience
  • Strong netcode with up to 16 players online and via LAN
  • Support of ingame lobby and online ranking system based on the ELO system which is used in chess tournaments
  • NAT support to allow hosting through routers and networks.

Editor features:

  • Different heightmap polygons draw sizes to optimize polygon usage and performance
  • Free scalable ground texture size, polydetails and heightmap size
  • Polydrawing tool to expand or minimize your created heightmap
  • Different heightmap terrain drawing to simulate various grounds such as roads, stone, grass, snow and many more
  • Automatic terrain filling tool, which draws the terrain type according to the texture painted on it

Entity features:

  • Very strong AI, each actor has an independent AI and decides whether he attacks, retreats, calls for support or just hides from enemies. There is no master AI, all AI actors will communicate with each other and work together. If the AI is weaker than the opponent it will try to retreat and to get help from allies
  • Inventory feature, each unit carries its own inventory
  • Simulation of skills for each single unit for different types of weapons
  • Realistically simulation of field of view of every single unit
  • Different Texmods for your entities, change the textures with one mouseclick
  • Details for your vehicles which are chosen randomly for each entity or can be selected by the missiondesigner
  • Number generators to randomly assign a vehicle number above its texture
  • Visual damage model shows hits on the vehicle surface
  • Each part of a house can be removed, added or exchanged with alternative part to add various variants to a single building
  • Edifice editor to set groups of buildings or single buildings to remove their roofs when entered by a player unit to allow inhouse movement
  • Normal, specular, environment and cubemap support
  • Smart LOD system which allows you to easily manage different groups of objects and their shadowcasting aswell as their LOD leves

After months of work our programmer had finally managed to work out under barrel grenade launchers.
As you know, GEM engine strictly forbade to have secondary weapon on a rifle. One rifle = one weapon. There were attempts to overcome this by having 2 rifles on a soldier, one firing grenade, one firing rifle ammunition.

We now have functional grenade launcher. Currently we have AK-74 with GP-25 which is working but planning to add even more. Principle of work is quite simple:

1. select a soldier that carries AK-74 with GP-25 (another good thing is that whole operation is not linked to a soldier but to the rifle itself so any soldier can fire it)
2. select appropriate action (grenade launcher)
3. click on a place to fire there

Or you can take direct control and click right mouse button (to load the launcher) and left mouse button (to fire it). Simple and effective. And most important thing is: as soon as you fire it you can fire assault rifle ammunition, as visible here:


We also plan on some GUI enhancements to ease up exploitation of this new feature. This will surely change multiplayer a lot, no more super squads armed with RG-6. Grenadiers are now in their true form.

The GEM Editor is really good made because you can create everything .You can bulid buildings,trees etc. . But what is really cool about the editor is that you can play in it . You create a map and after that you can play it ,without leaving the editor.All in all I think the GEM editor is really well made.
