The GameMaker: Studio™ family of products caters to entry-level novices and seasoned game development professionals equally, allowing them to create casual and social games for, iOS, Android, desktop and the Web (HTML5) in record time and at a fraction of the cost!
Great to make both easy, simple games in minutes for beginners, and tons of options for those who are willing to go one step further. Game maker has been used to create commercial games, for iPods, iPhones, iPads and psp. The game maker community on Yoyogames is strong (well over 100 000 members) and very supportive. Posting your game on this community can result in it being published on an international scale, in addition to being featured and played by thousands of people.Yoyogames have also released a new version of game maker (8.1) which will soon allow users to submit their games to the company. If their game is good enough, it will soon be able to be placed on the app store, and the developer(s) may even be able to receive profit from their game. I highly recommend for you to try out this program, and I am sure that you will have great fun with it.
GM Studio is great. They have given ordinary Joes like myself the ability to create great games the way they were suppose to be created...without major corporations forcing "creative" changes. That's the beauty of Indie games, you make the games YOU want to, and GM Studio is so affordable that the only thing you need is a little cash and some creativity. Keep it up YOYO games you guys are awesome!
Game maker is a very nice 2d engine. I find myself using it all the time. The Gamemaker scripting language (GML) is very easy to learn, even for people who have never programmed before, and if you're not up for it there's even a drag'n'drop system. The engine comes with all you need to get started, it's pure plug'n'play! YoYo games has a very good and helpfull community wich will help you out form alot of trouble. There's alot of free engines submittet and awesome free to use code wich will make development much smoother and shave down a lot of the time spent.
I do have a few complaints though:
* Physics coding is hard as ****. I once tried to do an extendable rope, but it took me waaay to long so I had to give up on that game, but it might just be my current skill limitations...
* The level/room editor can get sort of annoying at times when you have to drag objects around the room
* I think the collision system is too much trouble and can be rather unpredictable at times
I think that's really it and my thoughts of the engine, all in all I'd say it's the way to go for 2d game development!
