About Story of Alexia with 1 comment by iSolsticeDay on Oct 25th, 2014

Sorry for the lack of updates, everyone, but I'm really, really busy lately. Thing is... the game has finally entered this full-time-development phase I was talking about a few months earlier. The game's being in active development now and it's closing in on completion. I don't have much time for the PR buzz at the moment. Forgive me.

But now the good news: I made a new level, a new enemy (not really 100% new, as one of them appears in a cave in the Icelands, but that area is optional, and I also overhauled the enemy since the last demo. So in a sense, it's quite new).

I also added in some new areas and bits!

The level is called 'Sky Relic' and is based off of Sonic's Sky Sanctuary Zone. But I tried to make it stand out on its own as well. The level has an area based off of the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, as the game already has a lot of historic references (not all that clear in the demos, but the full version will have a lot of them, as the thing starts about halfway into the plot). The level is the first to have the new enemy.

Below is a little screenshot of the enemy attacking:

New enemy!

The enemy is really dangerous, as you might see. It's blood-magic missiles do 10 hitpoints damage which is about half of your max hitpoints at that point of the game. They also have a lot of hitpoints, and hurt you even when you stand one or two tiles away from them because of the blades/launchers they carry on both sides. The missiles can be blocked with a timed sweep of the Glacier Ice-Blade or the Wonder Hammer. The Axe-Blade can be used too, but it's diffcult cause of its short range, so I don't recommend it.

Here's a screenshot of Alexia attacking the enemy:

Preview pictures

The Wonder Hammer is awesome for these kinds of enemies due to it being able to hit on a distance with its shockwave, but it comes with a price: the weapon is slow.

Below is a screenshot of an earlier part of the level:

Note: I didn't add items and enemies yet when I took this screenshot, so don't worry; it has them now.

I also added a crop fields area at the Sagittarius Town. Remember the cave left of the teleporter at the beginning of the Sagittarius Forest? The one with the lock? That one leads to the cropfields. On a side note: I might discard locks altogether, as I don't see any use in them in this kind of game. Who would put a huge lock in front of a cave? Talk about willing suspension of disbelief-breaking!

Below is a screenshot of the crop fields:

The key in the inventory will probably be replaced by either a kind of potion, or an item you need for a sidequest that can be bought in that odd shop, which will probably be overhauled too. It's wacky, crazy mood clashes too much with the game's serious nature IMO. Another huge suspension of disbelief-breaker for me.

On another note, a few people had criticism on the backgrounds in the desert. I changed all of the backgrounds (not only the desert one) to make them a bit lighter and less saturated. So here's a little screenshot of the desert:

This any better? I hope so, but if there's something that still needs to be changed, I'll gladly do it. It might clash with the game's art style, however... But I think at least having the parallax backgrounds be lighter is a step forwards at least!

The black NPC (Zaire) will also have a more important role in the story than the demo makes it seem like. She is just in the demo to test out her sprite and show people what the character looks like, etc. and because I didn't have ideas at that time, but in the full version, she won't be in the town until you meet her halfway in the game. She will have a fully developed character just like Shelby, Alexia, Jack, etc. with stuff and flaws and strengths and quirks that set her apart (I mean, why would only the white ones have roles? That's just nonsense. People are people, not stereotypes, no matter what color. I hate video games that don't understand that) and I won't tell much about it because it's a huge spoiler. What I'll tell, however, is that she plays a role in the big bad's plan, and may even know more about the big bad than Alexia and her friends do. Shane and Van will also be expanded upon later in the plot.

That's all I have for now!

Hands down, GameMaker is a straightforward tool to make simple games. You can get a rough prototype of your game up and running in no time. The drag and drop buttons can really help beginners learn the nuances of coding, but GameMaker also includes a code editor for more advanced users.

Excellent game creation program, (only one that I have used), but some one needs to update this page! A new version of game maker was released (8.1) some time ago, and I don't think that that is mentioned here. However, this is a great program, and I highly recommend for everyone to try it out.

Great to make both easy, simple games in minutes for beginners, and tons of options for those who are willing to go one step further. Game maker has been used to create commercial games, for iPods, iPhones, iPads and psp. The game maker community on Yoyogames is strong (well over 100 000 members) and very supportive.
