The Drag[en]gine Animation System is one of the most advanced ones. Animators produce animations for game objects and work with a simple Controller/Rule based system. The rules define how animations are build ( various rules exist ranging from animation to inverse kinematics ) and the controllers control the application of rules. At the end of the day you simply work with controller values and changing rules from time to time ( usually changing only the move you want to play ). Multiple rules can use the same controller. You are free to design your animator the way it fits best your game.
