maybe someday this will be replaced with actual 3D surfaces referenced/drawn using bump maps :D it looks kinda weird around the base of objects and the edges of shadows..

I think it's actually one of the dx11 features. Instead of bump, we get realtime displacement maps. I actually tried some of the DX11 demos on my computer and it does what it advertises, bit harsh on the HW though.

This Paralax Occlusion Mapping, or POM, which is available on Cryengine 2. This is not a new feature of Cryengine 3.
