I've been craving Modular Combat for many months now and i couldn't bear to wait for Modular Combat 2 to come out so i thought i'd take a crack at fixing it. This is version 3 of the fix. If the previous versions didn't work for you, then this one should.
Well i managed to do just that! and not only did i do it, i wrote a batch file that completely automates the task for you! (damn thing took me over 20 hours to write and debug). You must run the batch in Administrator mode.
To use the attached fix, you need the following installed:
- Team Fortress 2 (the batch file uses a tool in TF2)
- Half-Life 2: Deathmatch
- Half-Life 2: Episode 2
These 3 are required for the game to work flawlessly. If you don't own Half-Life 2: Episode 2 then a couple of enemies will show up as huge red error models. If you plan on playing the upcoming Half-Life 3, i suggest you get Half-Life 2: Episode 2 because Half-Life 3 apparently will continue the storyline. Episode 2 costs $8 on Steam and you can get it here.
If you dont have Team Fortress 2 (it's free and won't cost you a penny) or don't want to install Team Fortress 2 then you'll have to do the complicated manual fix yourself (see end of this description for info).
Automatic Fix (TF2 Required):
- Click the Download button above.
- Extract the contents of the zip someplace on your hard drive.
- Double click "Fix Modular Combat.bat".
- Follow the on-screen instructions.
- Wait. The whole process will take several minutes to complete and if you close the window, you'll have to start it all over again.
Manual Fix (No TF2 required):
- Download GFCScape from here.
- From within GFCScape, open hl2mp_pak_dir.vpk You can find the directory for it on your steam library page (right click "Half-Life 2: Deathmatch", click Properties, click "Local Files" tab and then click "Browse Local Files".
- Navigate to the directory you found above for HL2:DM; right click the Root directory, select "Extract" and choose a folder to extract to (Eg. C:\HL2DM).
- Go to your "Half-Life 2: Deathmatch" directory (use path from above) and copy the entire maps folder to your modularcombat folder (it should be located in "C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\SourceMods\modularcombat".
- Go into the folder where you extracted all the HL2DM files and copy the following folders into your modularcombat folder (see path in step 4): maps, materials, models, sound. When copy asks if you want to replace files, click yes.
- Open GFCScape again, open ep2_pak_dir.vpk You can find the directory for it on your steam library page (right click "Half-Life 2: Episode Two", click Properties, click "Local Files" tab and then click "Browse Local Files".
- Navigate to the directory you found above for HL2:Ep2; right click the Root directory, select "Extract" and choose a folder to extract to (Eg. C:\HL2EP2).
- Go into the folder where you extracted all the HL2EP2 files and copy the following folders into your modularcombat folder (see path in step 4): materials, models, sound. When copy asks if you want to replace files, click yes.
- You're done!
PS: don't forget to run the .bat in "administrator" mode.
Thanks, ill add that to the description.
Thank you, I wanted to play this again for a loooong time. I had a lot of fun when it was released :)
THanks man!
I made a mistake in the syntax of the batch file, so download and run it again.
V2 also has a problem. Before i upload the fixed version I'm looking into a way to completely automate installation (so you wont have to do the pre fix).
I run it. Says it works. I have HL2, HL2 DM, EP1 and EP2 installed and working and yet it says I don't have DM and EP2 installed on my system. :(
