This unofficial "patch" allows you to play Diablo II in resolutions other than 640x480 and 800x600. It is, for the most part, completed, but there are still a few issues that have not been worked out. The "patch" lets you select any resolution 640x480 or higher that is supported by your current display adapter/monitor. There are no other changes to the game other than this.

The downloaded "patch" should consist of 4 files:

  • D2MultiRes.txt
  • D2MultiResGame.exe
  • D2MultiRes.dll
  • D2MultiRes.mpq

To install, simply copy D2MultiResGame.exe, D2MultiRes.dll and D2MultiRes.mpq to your Diablo II directory. You do not need to copy over or replace any of your files, and none of your files will be changed. At the moment, D2MultiRes only supports the GDI (windowed mode) and DirectDraw graphics plugins. If you are using Glide you'll almost certainly crash. If you're using Direct3D you'll be able to run Diablo II, but expect to see some funky graphic glitches while playing the game. To switch to DirectDraw, run D2VidTst.exe (found in your Diablo II directory) and choose the DirectDraw option. You shouldn't notice any major drawbacks for using DirectDraw over Direct3D, so for most users this probably won't be a problem.

To run, start D2MultiResGame.exe. You may use any of the normal command line options available when playing Diablo II, such as "-w" for windowed or "-direct -txt" for mods. Diablo II will start in its normal resolution, however when playing a game you will be able to switch to a new, higher resolution. To do so, just go to the Video Options menu and select the Resolution menu item. This will bring up a new panel that will list your available resolutions. Click the one you wish to play in and
Diablo II will switch to that resolution.

I've followed the instructions but every time I try to open the exe I get "Unable to open d2multires.dll". I'm using 1.13c of Diablo and 1.02 of this mod.

Unless the problem is not running in windows mode however I'm unsure how to do this.

Hi everyone!

the mod "works" for me, I mean I can start the game, but there is no option to change the resolution. does anybody know why?
I had updated the game previously to 1.12a version. I copied everything that needed to be copied... what might be the problem?
another question: does this work with LoD? or is there another multires mod that does?

nicklemarr Jul 30 2011 replied:

Go to option, then video, then resolution. Screen will flash then you should be able to select any resolution supported. Yes, it works with LoD.

The world seriously needs a Multires for Patch 1.13!
Hopefully it will be able to finally work with Glide!
Or is there a similar program like this?

When i switch to DirectDraw,D2MultiResGame.exe wont launch. I can see a diablo II process running, but never launches me into the game. If i switch back to Direct3D it launches fine, but i get all the weird graphical abnormalities. Any thoughts?

To every one that have problems running the multires patch. Please MAKE sure you have a clean install and diablo 2 patch v1.12a. Multires patch DOES NOT work with patch v1.13c. Also, for best results run with DirectDraw and it will fix all your wierd graphics glitches. If you run it with Direct3d expect wierd pixel/graphics glitches. When running DirectDraw it will take the game 2 to 4 minutes to load. That is normal!!

If you have glitches with directdraw and using windows vista/7 due to windows aero effects etc..
Rename game.exe to game.bc then rename D2MultiResGame.exe to game.exe make a batch file with the following:

rundll32.exe dwmApi #104
taskkill -f -im explorer.exe
start "game" "C:\Program Files (x86)\Diablo II\game.exe"
rundll32.exe dwmApi #102

When you are done playing the game just click any key on keyboard to replace explorer.exe

Is also possible to use this patch with PlugY
PlugY can be found here:
If you are going to use plygy make sure you edit line in the batch file to this:
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Diablo II\Mod PlugY\PlugY.exe"

That should do the trick.

My set up.
Intel quadcore 2.5 ghz
6 gig of ram ddr3
Windows 7 Ultimate edition
Nvidia GTX 470
36" Monitor @ 1920x1080 HDMI output

Hi, if u want to play at high resoltuion with the latest patch which is 1.13c, here is a fix that work pretty well.

First go at this site h t t p: // www . svenswrapper . de / english / downloads . html and download this compressed file gl32ogl14e.zip

1st step is to copy those files glide3x.dll and glide-init.exe into your game directory then started glide-init.exe

In the Main menu choose Glide-infos next query open gl-infos. If nothing is listed under unsupported extensions its fine
pick settings and untick(or tick it, depend of your preference) keep aspect ratio and tick desktop resolution(mine is 1920 x 1080p), and vsync
Then test to verify it works properly.

If it's successful framerate must stay higher than 25, next run D2VidTst.exe -> run test -> pick glide and there you go.

They are more setting you can play with just look at the glide-readme.txt

I found this in another DiabloII site.

hope it help.

First of all thank you Carcajou101 for the information,
i tried everything you said plus other tweaks in the readme, everything seems to be fine, all tests pass but the game resolution doesnt change to the one specified in the settings.

Cockbite Apr 24 2011 replied:

Thanks, Carcajou101, but I have the same problem as Machariel. No matter what settings I use, the game doesn't look any different.

I'm going to use the glide wrapper anyway because I want to use the latest patch. I also hate how D2MultiRes makes the game darker and breaks the minimap.

iberussm Jun 27 2011 replied:

The information you provide here, does not work. I've just spent about 2-3 hours struggling to get it to work, but it does not work. I open the file from this patch after I do what you said, and it still says that it cannot open it, and then it tells me it's closing D2. There has to be something preventing it. If it's possible to do it for a previous patch, then it's possible to do it for a more recent patch. So why is it not working?

+1 vote     reply to comment
Cockbite Apr 27 2011 says:

I've figured out the problem, Machariel. The Glide wrapper is not supposed to change the resolution.

What it does is it takes the D2 resolution setting (640x480 or 800x600) and scales it (stretches and applies a filter) to the resolution you've selected.

Basically, it is always going to be 800x600, but it will look nicer.

I have a issue with 1.12a patch Diablo2.
The game ask me the CD and the CD is on the drive
I read this on an other forum :
Copy Protection Final Word
Patch 1.12 from Blizzard disables the CD check.
If you ever get "Please insert disc", this is NOT a problem with detecting the CD. The protection system is probably still built into the game even though the CD check itself is disabled. Make sure you use version 1.12 or later. If you get this problem after having this version installed, you are likely suffering from a buggy video driver as this is the only known (and proven possible) cause at this point.
DO NOT USE NOCD PATCHES - They are pointless, and won't fix the real problem."

Someones have the same issue than me.
With 1.13c, diablo does'nt ask for CD but i can't use d2multires-version-102

Hello everyone,

I am really eager to use this mod but can't seem to get it to work. I run windows 7 64 bit and have v1.12 of the game + expansion. When I set the game to use directdraw it needs to render every character in the corner of my screen for a few minutes, no problem, just launches afterwards. The game opens like it usually would. When I select my character and load the map (rogue encampment) it just freezes. After waiting a while I found out I got the dreaded access violation c0000005 error in the background. This happens everytime. I have tried the following:

- change colors to 256
- change rendering method to direct3d
- compatability modes
- running as administrator
- pulling the plug of my 2nd monitor
- different character

I also tried a different installation. The first one was a downpatched version I downloaded of the website (automatically fully up to date), second one a torrented version patched up to 1.12. I don't have a cd, I only purchased the digital version.
I really don't know what to do now, I still get the error every single time. Can anybody help me?

Same issue here.
Win7 64
PlugY 10
LOD 112.49 = b (shows when attempt to apply patch)
D2MultiRes v102 = (in file properties)

Running just d2multires crashes with the exception
Running just PlugY.exe works.

I tried everything in the last post by justgosh on the site

Tried all 3 video modes using run as administrator.

Also using the script about to disable aero (rundll32.exe dwmApi #104) and kill explorer (which fixes Age of Empires screen issues btw)

PlugY.log shows it loaded everything, ends with

Tried D2MultiResGame.exe renamed game.exe as a prior post suggested. This did not work in any of the 3 video modes.

I've read and reread the d2multires.txt and PlugY survival guide, everything is setup right.

Also tried in a VM with XP SP3, got Unrecoverable internal error 01a82b65 line # 309
Found one answer to fix this, but the translation was "place the option kotoblozhsky."
I don't want to run in a VM, just testing = different error in the same place.

BTW nicklemarr you have some serious patience :P

This issue is addressed in the "readme" htm, file \SUPPORT\d2\accessv.htm
Access Violation (C0000005):

Diablo II: Lord of Destruction Server error Unhandled Exception: (c0000005)
Errors such as these can be related to several things.
Step one is to uninstall Diablo II Expansion
Step two is to run scandisk and defrag on your hard drives
Step three is to reinstall Diablo II Expansion
Step four is to update your video drivers
Step five is to check if your system is over heating or overclocked
Step six is to send us your system information

Good luck with step 6.

This works perfectly no issues at all (THIS ONLY WORKS WITH V 1.12 of D2\D2LoD). im running it from direct3d setting. then you execute (run the game from) D2MultiResGame.exe(the .exe file in the DL zip file)after you have extracted everything into your Dioblo II folder. Load\create your champion and once you are in game THEN you can change the resolution in video settings. This works in the original Dioblo II and the LoD expansion. DO NOT LOG INTO BATTLE.NET WITH THIS.....HACK......INSTALLED YOU WILL BE PERMANENTLY BANNED. For safety measures either remove the 3-4 files from the Dioblo 2 folder before playing on battle.net or have a secondary install. I do not know if it is safe for a direct connect game but single player is 99.99% safe

hot_ice Jan 10 2015 replied:

ofc just copy paste rename diablo2 for different mods that you do not start with D2SE, it's not like d2 takes alot space. and then you don't need to change and rename files again and again for every mod you play (I have currently 5 mods installed all installed on a different way, ok 2 are d2se, so 4 diablo 2 directories.

That way there is no chance you will ever go online with a mod. D2 is a great game to come back and dive into again, so having this set on my pc and coming back after a year for example is just great and I can really recommend the work as an investion.

of course... d2 is so popular and old, many people work on it, there are many many ways...
-easiest is a version changer that only requires 2 clicks
and it can also be done manually with 2 clicks via copy paste
-second is downloading game.exe from battle.net (the old one) and then als downloading the patch 1.12 from there and put it into your directory to install it, make sure that directory is your main diablo2path (I'm not sure if it takes the path or the directory it's in).

I doubt you will ever read this answer, I still searched the link for you:...

a quick reply would be nice, i recently bought diablo 2 and would love to play such a great classic in this high resolution, so please help :D

thanks everone

hot_ice Jan 10 2015 replied:

yes it is normal the game starts in 640x800. You should also start the game in windowed mode (create a link to your d2multires and start with parameter -w...)

"in game" press ESC and then video -> resolution should be blank, press on it and it will List several resolutions.

If even "in game" you can't change the resolution then you have installed it wrong, however the installation is very easy, so try again.

ps: Only a few mods work with 1.12, I am sure some do, but atm I only found mod: PDM (perfect drop mod).

Hi there is no word about which version this supports...

It is such a great "patch" for modern times, where you are just used to having a bigger screen... It's very unfortunate the creater doesn't play d2 anymore (or comes back sometimes), because then he wouldbe motivated to upgrade it :>

So right now we can only play in a bigger Resolution in one only Patch 1.12... Every mod that doesn't work with 1.12 also needs to be played in that small window again.
